Job Summary
The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the firm, including budgeting, forecasting, trust and operational accounting, billing processes, financial compliance, and reporting. This role ensures financial accuracy and provides strategic insights that support the firms growth, profitability, and compliance with legal and ethical standards. The ideal candidate has experience in legal or professional services finance, strong leadership skills, and an analytical mindset.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Financial Management & Reporting
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including profit/loss, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
Monitor firm-wide financial performance and provide variance analysis against budget and forecast.
Manage monthly and year-end closings, reconciliations, and journal entries.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the development and management of the firms annual budget and financial forecasts.
Work with department heads and practice group leaders to support budgeting and cost control.
Billing, A/R, & Collections Oversight
Supervise billing team and ensure timely and accurate invoice generation.
Monitor accounts receivable, aging reports, and collections activities.
Address complex billing issues or client-specific invoicing requirements (e.g., LEDES billing, e-billing platforms).
Trust Accounting & Compliance
Oversee client trust accounts in compliance with IOLTA and bar association rules.
Ensure segregation of client funds and accurate reconciliation of trust accounts.
Coordinate with external auditors and support regulatory filings and audits.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
Supervise finance staff (accountants, billing specialists, A/P, A/R clerks).
Develop and implement finance policies, internal controls, and best practices.
Collaborate with HR on payroll, partner compensation, and benefits-related financial matters.
Strategic Analysis & Support
Support leadership with financial modeling, pricing strategies, and profitability analysis by practice area or matter.
Provide financial insight for firm initiatives such as office expansion, technology investment, or lateral partner acquisition.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field (CPA, MBA preferred).
5–8 years of progressive finance/accounting experience, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment.
Proficiency in legal accounting systems (e.g., Aderant, Elite, Clio, ProLaw).
Strong understanding of GAAP, trust accounting rules, and legal billing practices.
Excellent Excel and financial modeling skills.
Strong leadership, communication, and analytical abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with e-billing portals and LEDES format
Knowledge of financial compliance specific to law firms (e.g., ABA Model Rules, IOLTA)
Familiarity with partner compensation models and capital contributions
Ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced legal environment

Combination of in-person meetings and remote work. Occasional travel is required for stakeholder engagement, community events, and conferences.

Salary and Benefits
Salary: 100k to 150k with a hiring target of 120k;
