Judicial Branch of California See More Job Openings by This EmployerAssociate Justice Gail Ruderman Feuer of the California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, is accepting applications for an appellate attorney to start in August 2025.
The attorney will work collaboratively with Justice Feuer in preparing opinions in a broad range of appeals, including civil and criminal cases. The attorney will have significant responsibility over complex and challenging cases and work in a collegial setting with Justice Feuer and her other appellate attorneys. The attorney’s duties will include reviewing appellate briefs and trial records, researching and analyzing legal issues, drafting proposed opinions, proofreading final opinions, and making recommendations on the resolution of appeals, among other tasks. Excellent analytical, writing, and research skills are mandatory, as well a strong work ethic and dedication to excellence. Familiarity with appellate practice and/or prior judicial clerkship experience is preferred.
The position will begin in August 2025. Details will be discussed during the interview process.
Duties- Collaborate with Justice Feuer on drafting opinions across a wide range of civil and criminal appellate cases.
- Take primary responsibility for managing complex and high-profile cases.
- Contribute to a collegial and team-oriented environment with Justice Feuer and fellow appellate attorneys.
- Review appellate briefs and trial court records to assess legal arguments and procedural issues.
- Conduct thorough legal research and analysis on diverse and nuanced legal matters.
- Draft well-reasoned proposed opinions for consideration.
- Proofread and edit final versions of opinions for accuracy and clarity.
- Provide informed recommendations on the appropriate resolution of appeals.
- Carry out additional related duties as assigned.
Level B: $8,809 to $10,274 per month
Level C: $8,891 to $11,301 per month
Level D: $10,234 to $13,659 per month
Level B: Active membership in the State Bar of California and the equivalent of two
years of post-bar legal experience in a legal setting such as a private law practice,
corporation, government agency, law school, court, or legal publishing company.
OR
Equivalent to two years of post-bar legal experience in a legal setting as described above, including one year of experience as an appellate attorney, Level A, with the judicial branch.
Level C: Active membership in the State Bar of California and the equivalent of three
years of post-bar legal experience in a legal setting such as a private law practice,
corporation, government agency, law school, court, or legal publishing company.
OR
One year of experience as an appellate attorney, Level B, with the judicial branch.
Level D: Active membership in the State Bar of California and the equivalent of four
years of post-bar legal experience in a legal setting such as a private law practice,
corporation, government agency, law school, court, or legal publishing company.
OR
One year of experience as an appellate attorney, Level C, with the judicial branch.
