Primary Position Purpose:
This role provides legal support for litigation, claims, and risk management functions across U.S. Xpress, Inc. and affiliated entities. The position is responsible for assisting with case assessments, monitoring litigation, preparing internal stakeholders for involvement in legal matters, and supporting outside counsel relationships. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and eager to grow within a fast-paced legal environment.
Position Functions:
Support the Legal and Risk teams in managing litigation and claims, including internal investigations, document preservation, and records management.
Assist in preparing internal reports on active litigation and claims matters; track deadlines and ensure timely responses.
Help coordinate with outside counsel on pleadings, discovery, litigation strategy, and preparation of witnesses under supervision.
Conduct legal research and prepare summaries or memos on regulatory compliance, litigation trends, and legal risk.
Draft or review basic legal correspondence, litigation holds, subpoenas, and routine filings.
Participate in interviews and preparation sessions with employees involved in legal matters.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legal issues and regulatory developments affecting the transportation industry.
Review and assist in responses to regulatory or administrative complaints under attorney supervision.
Contribute to policy development related to claims management, litigation hold procedures, and data retention.
Support financial and loss-run reporting activities through document review and data collection.
Collaborate in-person with all levels of the organization to harness collective intelligence of the workforce.
Attend in-person meetings and trainings on recent legal developments, business goals, and objectives.
Engage remotely and in-person with stakeholders as needed to ensure legal alignment and manage risk exposure.
Travel may be required up to 25% to attend necessary mediations, depositions, trials, etc.
May include other duties as assigned by management.
What We’re Looking For:
Education
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school is
Experience
0-3 years of relevant working experience
Experience in transportation industry is preferred
Skills & Abilities
Superior written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Strong problem-solving skills
Must have an enthusiasm for and excel at drafting and interpreting contract language with an emphasis on clear, succinct work product
Ability to work independently, efficiently, proactively, and effectively on multiple projects under tight deadlines
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Experience in contract management systems is preferred
Licenses & Certifications
Must have a current law license in good standing or the ability to obtain a law license within six months of hire
Supervisory Responsibility
May be called upon to supervisor or direct the work of legal assistants
