OVERVIEW


The Office of the County Prosecutor is offering an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated Legal Secretary to join our Criminal Division, a team with a profound responsibility to protect community safety and uphold justice. This role supports the work that ensures constitutional rights are preserved, victims’ voices are recognized, and the integrity of our legal system remains strong.

You will play a key part in supporting the attorneys and legal professionals who serve our community every day. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced legal environment, values accuracy and confidentiality, and wants to advance their clerical and administrative skills while contributing directly to meaningful public service. 

As the Legal Secretary, you will:

  • Respond to routine inquiries by phone and in person, providing accurate information while maintaining strict confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Manage reception duties, including taking and distributing messages, and assisting individuals who may be experiencing sensitive or emotionally charged situations.
  • Operate standard office equipment, including computers, printers, copiers, phones, and fax machines.
  • Input, verify, update, and retrieve information within the case management system to ensure accurate and timely case tracking.
  • Prepare and open new case files; maintain active files; and monitor deadlines for subsequent required actions.
  • Type correspondence, legal documents, reports, forms, and other materials with exceptional accuracy and adherence to department formatting standards.
  • Support other legal assistants and office staff to ensure seamless workflow within the division.
  • Retrieve documents and case information to support judges, attorneys, and members of the public.
  • Prepare and process legal documents as assigned.
  • Lift and move office materials or files as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the Prosecutor’s Office.
What you bring: 
  • Professional experience: One year of experience working in a clerical or administrative support role that involves working directly with customers. Related education demonstrating required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job may substitute for up to six months of experience.
  • Communication/Interpersonal skills: 
    • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally, even in sensitive or potentially emotional situations.
    • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, remain organized under pressure, and maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Additional preferred qualifications:
    • Prior experience or education in legal office practices

  • This position is classified as eligible for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
  • This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME 1308 and the Kitsap County Personnel Manual.   • This recruitment is being used to fill an existing open position, and may be used to fill future openings for up to six (6) months.
  • Work hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  
  • Prior to employment, the successful candidate must
    • Submit official transcripts from an accredited college or university or business school, if education is being used to meet the minimum qualifications.
    • Pass all job-related examinations/tests necessary to demonstrate required knowledge, skills and abilities, as determined by the hiring authority at time of job posting.
    • Authorize and complete a criminal background check. This position requires a security clearance. Prior to employment, a thorough background check through Law Enforcement Agencies and previous employers will be conducted. Kitsap County reserves the right to independently determine applicant's prior criminal conviction record.
