Job Description

National law firm seeks an experienced Legal Assistant or Practice Assistant to work in its Washington D.C. office.  The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, be inquisitive, an effective communicator, have sharp attention to detail, and maintain a client-centered approach.  This is a unique opportunity to join a Chambers-ranked, nationally recognized team that provides cutting edge advice to blue chip international clients.  The role offers substantial growth potential, and the incumbent will work alongside friendly colleagues who have excellent industry reputations, all within a firm that offers a structured and supportive environment. 

Key tasks include:
 
  • Client Development:  Facilitate practice group business goals by regularly attending industry events, engaging with key clientele, industry representatives, and government officials.  Track client activities, including conferences, client visits, and other relevant business events.
 
  • Paralegal Duties:  Track, research, and provide internal and client summary reports of the activities and requirements of relevant regulatory bodies.  Draft and file submissions to administrative agencies under attorney review and approval.  This role involves minimal litigation, but the PA may occasionally be asked to handle document management.
 
  • Administrative Management and Oversight: Facilitate team meetings.  Address client inquiries and administrative matters, including budgeting, accrual forecasting, e-billing, and timekeeper approvals.  Monitor invoices and payments as well as outside counsel guideline compliance.  Handle file openings and closings and entering time.
Maintain, update, and manage the team’s calendar, attorney schedules, track deadlines, coordinate travel and events, and submit expense reports. 

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:
  • An aviation background is helpful but not required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm or in a government agency or corporation in a comparable capacity.
  • Ability to type 65 wpm – excellent spelling, punctuation and grammar required and knowledge of legal terminology.
  • Competent in the use of computers and Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Excellent organizational skills and people skills.
Working Conditions: This position requires sitting for long periods of time while operating a computer. At times, employees are required to work in excess of the normal work schedule, and travel, particularly during industry events. Employees in this position must be mobile, have the ability to type with both hands, bend, and have ability to lift and carry files weighing approximately 10-15 lbs.
