Job Summary

Trial Specialists provide advanced, complex assistance in support of client case teams, and supervise and coordinate all aspects of trial, mediation, arbitration or any other manner of dispute resolution on behalf of firm clients. Trial Specialists have a minimum billing requirement of 1600 hours per year.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide trial support on active litigation matters, serving and attending as lead paralegal on trial teams
  • Assist with preparation for trial, including preparation of witness binders, deposition designations, review and organization of materials for use by team attorneys, preparation of electronic presentations, and coordination of litigation support function
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of all case-related electronic resources
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance (or oversees maintenance) of case chronologies, indices, and case files
  • Cite check, Blue Book, and proofread pleadings, briefs and other documents as required
  • Coordinate document production process, including review for responsiveness and/or privilege, tagging and redaction, and assisting with logistics of coordination
  • Prepare redaction logs, privilege logs, and production logs as appropriate
  • Coordinate all trial logistics, including setting up the war room(s), reserving hotel and office space, and securing necessary equipment and supplies
  • Prepare for and attend depositions of fact and expert witnesses
  • Schedule and track depositions, filing deadlines, and other case related deadlines
  • Assist with scheduling of witness and expert trial testimony as needed
  • Assist with preparation of presentation and/or graphics
  • Organize, label, and track trial exhibits, documents, and evidence
  • Arrange for transporting and setting up files and exhibits in the courtroom
  • Assist with voir dire, jury selection, jury instructions and jury interviews as requested, including observing sessions and taking notes for case team.
  • Order, review, and summarize trial and post-trial transcripts
  • Gather and organizes documents for a record on appeal and/or a joint appendix
  • Conduct substantive factual and legal research to identify issues and relevant matters
  • Apply in depth knowledge of legal procedures, terminology, and activities to legal tasks
  • Manage cases by ensuring that all milestones are met as they move from discovery to trial or settlement.
  • Troubleshoot and identify potential concerns, determine solutions or alternatives, and develop/implement a resolution
  • Draft correspondence, memoranda, and pleadings
  • Analyze, index, and summarize documents, data, and depositions as required by team attorneys and/or clients
  • Coordinate discovery and/or filings with courts or government agencies
  • Organize work rooms
  • Attend periodic Practice Support department and Litigation & Trial department group meetings
  • Comply with mandatory annual Litigation & Trial department training requirement
  • Assist with skills development of junior practice support staff as appropriate
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to provide quality client service to both internal and external contacts, regarding matters of a routine nature
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work in a dynamic and complex environment to meet deadlines and daily requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge or guidance, analyze and interpret data from several sources to solve problems by applying precedent or extrapolating from previous experience
  • Strong attention to detail, including superior spelling and grammar
  • Must possess the interpersonal skills necessary to communicate information with tact and courtesy
  • Follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and with others in a cooperative, enthusiastic and friendly manner to accomplish position functions and participate in team efforts
  • Working knowledge of litigation databases, including but not limited to: Relativity, Case Notebook, CaseMap, Concordance, Trial Director, Sanction, etc.
  • Ability to supervise and provide direction, mentoring, training and assistance to practice support and other office staff as appropriate
  • Substantial knowledge of legal concepts, methodologies, and relevant area of law (e.g. litigation, IP, etc.).
  • Ability to travel on short notice and work more than 37.5 hours a week if necessary
  • Ability to safely lift, move and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds

Education

The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree.  Equivalent training and experience may substitute for education

Experience

The position requires a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as senior level litigation paralegal.

Comprehensive familiarity with all aspects of trial support required, along with multiple recent courtroom experience in first-chair role.

Our Firm is committed to fair and equitable compensation practice in accordance with applicable laws. The salary for this position $119,000 to $156,000 per year. Additional compensation may include a discretionary bonus. The salary for this position may vary based on location, market data, an applicant’s skills and prior experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other factors.
