The Eviction Right to Counsel Program is a grant-funded project where low- and moderate-income tenants facing eviction receive legal representation to ensure equity and inclusion in the legal system. The Eviction Right to Counsel Housing Navigator serves as the primary case handler for clients facing eviction or involved in disputes with landlords. This role may also support cases handled by attorneys. This role creates and maintains positive working relationships with organizations in the service area and state that would benefit the client population, including creating and updating community education materials, preparing community education workshops, and conducting outreach events about tenants’ rights and Legal Aid Society’s mission and services. This position is funded in part by and in collaboration with one or more grants. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Interview applicants and, in consultation with supervising attorney, determine level of service to be provided.
- Assess the needs of clients, providing relevant information and making appropriate referrals to other community resources and for additional Legal Aid Society (LASMTC) advice or representation.
- Act as a case manager for clients who are accessing housing-related resources and navigating the court systems, including assisting tenants in filing small claims lawsuits against their landlords, under attorney supervision.
- Assist clients navigating administrative procedures common in subsidized housing programs, such as income recertification, voucher relocation, and grievance hearings.
- Develop great working relationships and referral sources with shelters, aid organizations, housing authorities, and other community partners, for the benefit of the clients.
- Assist in outreach tasks, including updating and creating public education materials, planning and executing educational trainings for community partners, staffing a court help desk, and conducting tenants’ rights trainings.
- Maintain accurate and orderly client files, adhering to case management database policies and guidelines.
- Support the casework of attorneys as assigned, including assisting with connecting clients to resources and attending court proceedings as needed.
- Carefully follow directions and promptly respond to requests of attorneys and other LASMTC staff. Travel within the LASMTC service area is necessary.
- Bachelor’s Degree or a minimum of two years of relevant experience. Social work degree or experience a plus. Previous employment or volunteer work with a law office, court, social service agency, or other related setting. Experience working with low-income people.
- Appreciates the experiences and needs of people from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds.
- Basic proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel software. Experience with Canva or other graphic design software a plus.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including in person client interviews and while helping people in crisis. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish or Arabic is a plus.
- Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
