About this Job

The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an Accountant in the Administrative Services Division. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an Accountant 1-3, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.  

The position will be domiciled in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, East Baton Rouge Parish.  Offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory background check, drug testing, and reference verifications.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, financial operations, payroll, or banking; OR
  • Six years of full-time experience in any field plus twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree with twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, or statistics; OR
  • An advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, quantitative methods, or statistics; OR
  • Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.

Experience Substitution :

Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

Job Specification

This position is responsible for providing general accounting services related functions within the Department of Justice while maintaining the DOJ's Travel and assisting the department's daily accounting functions.

Job Duties and Other Information

The duties and requirements of an Accountant 1 -3 shall include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Reviews purchases, contracts, and supporting financial documentation for compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and funding requirements.
  • Prepares and processes journal vouchers, refund requests, adjustments, and other complex accounting transactions while ensuring proper accounting classification.
  • Utilizes accounting systems, spreadsheets, and other financial software to support fiscal operations, analysis, and reporting.
  • Performs accounting functions necessary for the processing and payment of vendor invoices received by the department.
  • Maintains cash management records, including funds drawn and received, funds disbursed by source, deposits of funds, and classification of revenues and expenditures.
  • Assists with account reconciliations, audits, financial analysis, and fiscal reporting activities.
  • Communicates professionally with agency staff, vendors, auditors, and other stakeholders regarding fiscal and accounting matters.
  • Participates in training and ongoing learning related to accounting procedures, financial systems, and state fiscal policies.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned.

  • $45,884.80 - $64,646.40/year
