General Summary
The Senior Illegal Fishing and Transparency Analyst is responsible for investigative work in support of ending illegal fishing, expanding transparency, rebuilding fisheries and protecting habitat and wildlife. The analyst conducts research using computer programming, big data analytics, and emerging technologies, including Global Fishing Watch, to support Oceana’s goals. The analyst is responsible for managing the analyst team and projects, producing published reports, case studies, and other data-based products to make positive changes in fisheries policy that help rebuild ocean abundance. The analyst needs to have strong technical skills paired with the ability to communicate complex data and technical work into compelling and understandable written and verbal content to a broad audience. This position involves collaboration across Oceana’s campaigns and countries to achieve Oceana’s domestic and international campaign goals.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
- Conduct data analyses and relevant research to create published reports and other materials to advance Oceana’s campaigns.
- Manage data research projects in support of Oceana’s domestic and international campaigns, policy teams, and science staff using Global Fishing Watch data.
- Manage the data team including analysts and fellows, train new staff and provide onboarding to learn Oceana’s data tools and processes.
- Oversee the development of visual assets to present data in compelling formats, including visually appealing maps, videos, and graphics.
- Engage with engineers, data scientists, and others from GFW to understand the data sets, analyses, and capabilities.
- Ensure uniformity and quality in the illegal fishing and transparency team’s data analysis.
- Other responsibilities as appropriate and necessary to achieve Oceana’s objectives.
Education and work experience:
- MS in Marine Science, Fisheries Science, Computer Science, Marine Policy, or related discipline, and 5 years of working experience, or equivalent of education and experience.
- Mastery R programming language.
- One year of management experience
- Working knowledge of SQL and BigQuery.
- Proficient in ArcGIS or geospatial mapping technologies.
- Occasional travel required.

The salary range for this position is $76,000 to $93,000 annually
