Purpose

The Director Newmont Metallurgical Services has a global scope that covers diverse and some times conflicting priorities. The position defines, creates, implements and leads the multiple global processes, standards, systems and procedures for the corporation’s Metallurgical Innovation, R&D, and Laboratory functions. The position performs planning, monitoring and project leadership duties in the strategic and execution phases of the Innovation and R+D functions.  The position is accountable for providing metallurgical subject matter expertise to Newmont’s operations and development projects.     

Essential Duties

  • Mentor Newmont’s global metallurgists in the design, completion, and assessment of metallurgical test work and plant optimization projects. 
  • The position will interact and collaborate with Global Functional Leads, Study and Project Directors, Study and Project team members, and with Value Assurance in order to facilitate and ensure that the Metallurgical processes are integrated with the Investment System process.
  • Responsible for managing and monitoring oversight of Newmont Intellectual Property assets in conjunction with the appropriate legal partners. The involvement includes patents, confidentiality agreements and technology license agreements and the commercialization of these assets.
  • Direct, plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of all aspects of Metallurgical Innovation and R&D work within a specific project scope and within the corporations overall innovation and R&D strategy.
  • Creates, or assists in the creation of, AFEs and manages budgets in accordance with Newmont’s policies and procedures.
  • Draw on extensive and broad industry experience to collaborate both with external industry partners (SME, MMA, AusIMM) and Research organizations to further develop Newmont’s technical expertise. These relationships will allow us to leverage the transfer of ideas, practices, technologies, co-development activities, into Newmont’s programs and processes.
  • Manage Newmont’s Metallurgical Services group with the focus on being industry leaders in metallurgical laboratory services and retaining and transferring knowledge appropriately throughout the global function and to operations and projects as and when required.  
  • Manage the Metallurgical Services group’s activities to provide services to Newmont’s global mine sites to help solve complex metallurgical problems and optimize process flow sheets to increase productivity and improve operating revenue.        
  • Provides leadership to the technical group to enable the group to develop appropriate flow sheet concepts for the processing of complex and low grade ore deposits to provide future growth and a technical competitive advantage for the company.
  • Provide Newmont’s leadership team with an on-going strategic plan to meet Newmont’s present and future needs in metallurgy.
  •  Provide management and leadership for Newmont’s global effort to implement  and engineer new and novel processes developed within the technical group to enhance  Newmont’s ability to maintain and increase its competitive edge in extracting gold from complex and low grade deposits  
  • Compile and managing the annual Metallurgical Services budget ($10 million).
  • Interact and form liaisons with external laboratories, consulting groups and metallurgical research organizations to further develop Newmont’s technical expertise and to promote Newmont as a company of choice for employment.
  • Provide leadership in the training and career development of employees within the group and on mine sites globally. The purpose is to ensure that Newmont competency in this area is the best available to ensure that all the groups are able to provide added value to new project development and mine sites in a timely and cost effective manner.

Training & Experience

  • Masters Degree or recognized world authority in the field of metallurgical technology, engineering and development ( publications/patents)
  • Greater than 20 years technical experience in Metallurgy  and incorporating multidisciplinary fields including  geology, mineralogy, analytical, mining, environmental, research and development and safety . Experience managing a laboratory and the development and implementation of new and novel process flow sheets.
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate the vision and accomplishments of the technical group to Newmont’s senior leadership team and Newmont’s cross function leaders and corporate and mine site executives and external technical organizations.
  • Leadership skills in developing and attracting world class technical people to work in Newmont’s technical facilities.
  • Experience with Intellectual Property development and asset management.
  • Must have extensive networking contacts with metallurgical consultants, Universities and International research organizations.
  • Commercial and legal experience to manage Newmont’s metallurgical intellectual property and patent portfolio.
  • Broad Experience with complex material processing such as oxide and refractory ores, with associated autoclave, roaster, or Sulphide flotation plants in addition to experience with oxide Au leaching and Cu/Au ore bodies.
  • Ability to influence and facilitate change in the organization.

Working Conditions

  • The position is located in the Denver Inverness office.
  • Position requires travel nationally and internationally to assist Newmont’s Metallurgical operations globally
