Description

About the position 

Reporting to the Generalist Law Lead, the Community Lawyer will deliver legal advice, casework, advocacy, and community legal education at a high standard. This role will also assist with the delivery of legal services like conducting client interviews, provision of legal assistance (as required through a range of outreach-based clinics), and providing duty lawyer services for family violence intervention order matters. The Community Lawyer will play an important part in identifying systemic legal issues and assisting with law reform work as directed by the Principal Lawyer and Generalist Lead 

The successful candidate will be committed to social justice and impactful service, delivering excellence as a legal practitioner, and addressing the legal needs of our communities. 

Key Selection Criteria 

  • Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctor and a current Victorian Legal Practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain the same) preferably with a minimum of 2 years post admission experience 

  • Demonstrated case management experience in a range of matters including infringements; motor vehicle accidents/insurance; criminal law; family law; family violence; civil and consumer law.  

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, including experience working with culturally diverse communities and clients experiencing social disadvantage.  

  • Ability to work under pressure as part of a busy team and manage a large and diverse caseload with competing deadlines.  

  • Ability to work independently at offsite locations and manage tasks and workloads relating to outreach service provision  

  • Duty lawyering experience  

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing for a range of purposes and a variety of audiences.  

  • Strong Computer literacy – experience with Microsoft software e.g. Word, Outlook, Publisher, Power-Point, Zoom, Microsoft Team, Access & Excel to generate own letters and use email.  

  • High level of commitment and professionalism.  

A current Driver’s License and the ability to travel between offices and outreaches is essential for this role.   

Experience working with communities in the Brimbank Melton region and the proficiency in a community language, would be considered an added advantage.
