In general, the incumbent must know and understand intellectual property laws pertaining to music and Church policies and procedures to protect the Church’s music assets to the maximum degree the law allows and protect the Church from infringing upon the intellectual property rights of others. In carrying out these responsibilities, the incumbent exercises professional discretion and independent judgment on matters of significance.



Responsibilities

Reviews and analyzes potential Church music and media materials and exercises discretion whether to certify that appropriate music licensing agreements, rights clearances, permissions, contracts, policies, and procedures are in place to protect the Church from financial and reputational harm.

Manages third-party music licensing and rights‑use requests for Church-owned or licensed musical works. Independently reviews, investigates, and analyzes requests against the Church’s intellectual property rights and policies. Frequently coordinates with Church departments and legal counsel. Negotiates legal and licensing terms as needed. Exercises discretion whether to grant or deny permission to use music or media materials.

Coordinates music‑related titles, catalog, and copyright registrations for the Church. Works with Church departments and area offices to collect specimens for applications and maintenance. Coordinates applications and renewals with Church and outside legal counsel. Responsible for management of the music catalog system. Coordinates copyright registration of widely distributed Church-owned musical works.

Coordinates music intellectual property infringement matters for the Church. Independently reviews, investigates, and analyzes infringement submissions against the Church’s rights and policies. Frequently coordinates with other departments. Coordinates with legal counsel and determines course of action. Corresponds with infringing parties and works toward amicable resolutions. Submits infringement claims to social media or streaming platforms on behalf of the Church.

Reviews and analyzes third-party contracts involving music licensing, performance rights, publishing rights, and synchronization or mechanical uses, and works with legal counsel to determine acceptability of terms and risk assessments on undocumented Church materials.

Provides specialized music licensing training for Church departments and area offices.

Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree, Paralegal certification, or successful completion of a two‑year paralegal course from an accredited learning institution, plus six years of directly related experience in music licensing, copyright and rights management, and industry relationship management, with experience in areas such as licensing negotiations, rights acquisition, catalog management, or permissions and contract operations. 

Demonstrated personal computer skills with significant experience in word processing, databases, spreadsheet, and e‑mail software products; Notary Public; ability to analyze and document complex copyright, licensing, and intellectual property situations and explain them to others; and excellent writing skills.
