Position Overview:
The VP of Legal, Regulatory & Government Affairs will be responsible for overseeing all legal, compliance, and regulatory matters impacting the organization. This role provides strategic counsel to senior leadership, ensures adherence to laws and regulations, and manages risk across the business. They will lead government affairs strategy, building relationships with policymakers and regulatory agencies to influence and anticipate legislative and policy changes. Additionally, this position directs internal and external legal resources and aligns compliance frameworks with organizational goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Manage all legal aspects of the company’s operations, including contracts, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property,
employment law, and litigation.
• Coordinate the preparation and filing of all required documents with regulatory bodies, including the SEC and stock exchanges.
• Identify and assess legal risks associated with business operations and develop strategies to mitigate such risks.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
• Act as the primary point of contact for external legal counsel and regulatory agencies.
• Lead and manage the legal department, including hiring, training, and mentoring legal staff.
• Foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement within the legal team.
• Resolves a broad range of regulatory, scientific, and technical issues concerning the application of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
• Applies knowledge of the drug approval process, and interprets the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and other pertinent and applicable laws and regulations.
• Works with reviewers to determine the extent of regulatory authority in specific situations.
• Develops and drafts proposals for revision of existing regulations and policy statements.
• Provides expert guidance, sensitive to both the technical and regulatory issues, in preparation of correspondence that interprets the regulation.
• Provides regulatory expertise in evaluating and developing responses to letters from the pharmaceutical industry.
• Identifies and evaluates the appropriateness of potential cases for enforcement action.
Education and Experience:
• Law degree, license to practice law in CO and 5 years of corporate counsel experience
• Experience with a highly regulated industry strongly required.
• Broad-based knowledge on various legal issues. Established ability to build internal client relationships across various functions and play an integral part of the senior leadership team.
• Demonstrated ability to think and contribute to key decisions quickly, and to communicate legal issues and solutions clearly and concisely.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including a clear and concise drafting style.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including ability to work independently and effectively within a team and a fast-paced business environment.
• Experience drafting complex commercial contracts or other experience demonstrating ability to manage commercial and legal negotiations, including strong negotiating skills and ability to influence and persuade.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with proven ability to manage up and work well in a collaborative team environment
• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Knowledge of Food, OTC, Cosmetic and/or Dietary Supplement regulations a plus
• Demonstrated expertise in strategic and tactical partnering with internal and external resources
• Works seamlessly in both a business and R&D environment
• Strong technical activity management in a stage-gate system is required
• Proven ability to deliver programs on time and within budget
Physical Requirements:
This position requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer use, frequent meetings and negotiations, and occasional light office activity such as lifting up to 10 pounds. 5-10% travel.
