Job Description

Function

The purpose is to provide legal research and recommendations to the Hampton Circuit Court judges and provide overall training, direction and supervision to law clerks. 

Minimum Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Must be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar. (Those awaiting Bar results may also apply.)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible legal experience.
  • Knowledge of law as applied to Virginia law and familiarity with courtroom procedures is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required.
  • Ability to deal effectively with challenging and changing deadlines; speak effectively with judges; express legal opinions effectively in writing. Child protective services check

  • National criminal/sex offender record check
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation including fingerprint-based criminal history records inquiries to both the Central Criminal Records Exchange and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in order to maintain the terminals that are used to access the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) data. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
Additional Requirements 
  • Requires the ability to prepare effective written communication, and the ability to communicate effectively verbally. Must be detail-oriented, possess strong organizational and follow-up skills, and have the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Must be able to create and maintain harmonious relationships with diverse populations.
  • This is an exempt position.
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
