Bio Patent Counseling Associate Attorney

Our client, a prominent AmLaw 50 international law firm who is consistently top-ranked in Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500 US, is seeking a Bio Patent Counseling Associate Attorney to join their renowned Intellectual Property group. This role is an exceptional opportunity to join a team that is exclusively committed to the life sciences sector, working with high-profile biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on complex patent development, protection, and enforcement matters for both small and large molecule portfolios.

 

Candidate Profile

 

  • JD from a top-tier law school with a strong academic record.
  • Active Bar Admission in Pennsylvania.
  • 4+ years of substantive experience in patent counseling and prosecution within the life sciences industry.
  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Proven experience with biotechnology companies and investors, focusing on international patent portfolio development, lifecycle management, non-infringement and invalidity analysis, post-grant proceedings, and IP due diligence.
  • Prior experience in the pharmaceutical industry is preferred.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Advise life sciences clients on comprehensive patent portfolio management, including development, prosecution, and enforcement of patents across domestic and international markets.
  • Lead client engagements on strategic IP lifecycle planning, addressing complex matters like second-generation drugs, biologics, and international patent strategy.
  • Conduct due diligence assessments and deliver high-quality counseling on transactions, infringement, defense, and avoidance strategies.
  • Represent clients in high-stakes patent disputes before the USPTO, including post-grant proceedings and other contentious matters.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to shape patent protection strategies aligned with client goals in discovery-stage biotechnology, as well as with established pharmaceutical companies.
  • Develop and implement IP strategies that protect and enhance the value of client assets, including advice on non-infringement, invalidity, and competitive positioning.
