- Assists the General Counsel's Office and the Inmate Records Office in providing daily legal advice and opinions, particularly with respect to sentencing matters.
- Provides legal advice to agency employees, attorneys, court officials and other agencies in the interpretation of the law and agency policies and procedures, to include interpretation of sentencing sheets and related documents.
- Responds to correspondence from attorneys, court officials, state agencies and inmates, primarily with respect to sentencing issues.
- Represents the agency in defense of cases filed by inmates involving sentencing issues, including investigation, case preparation, trial presentation and appeals.
- Representation may include complex and/or sensitive litigation.
- Reviews agency policy and develops new agency policy to comport with relevant statutes and case law.
- Performs legal duties as required by the Office of General Counsel and the Inmate Records Office.
- Position requires daily contact with inmates.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
- Membership in the South Carolina Bar within six (6) months of entry into the position.
- Must satisfy rule 403 Requirements within six (6) months of hiring.
