Job Description

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network (https://www.czbiohub.org/) is a group of nonprofit research institutes that bring together scientists, engineers, and physicians with the goal of pursuing grand scientific challenges on 10- to 15-year time horizons. The CZ Biohub Network focuses on understanding underlying mechanisms of disease and developing new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies.

The Opportunity

As the Counsel for Technology Transfer and Commercial Transactions, you will be a key member of the Network legal team and will play an important role in executing strategies for technology transfer and commercial transactions. You will partner with teams across the Network to help us manage, negotiate, and execute contracts, including with universities, research institutions, and commercial companies. As the Network continues to expand its work in life sciences research, you will help shape and implement legal strategies that enable collaboration and drive scientific breakthroughs in support of our mission.

What You'll Do

  • Review, analyze, negotiate, and draft a broad range of technology, intellectual property, and commercial agreements, including licensing, interinstitutional, data and material transfer, collaboration, vendor, and service agreements
  • Partner with internal stakeholders across the Network, including CZ Biohub San Francisco, CZ Biohub Chicago, CZ Biohub New York, and the CZ Imaging Institute, to support strategic transactions, scientific collaborations, and technology partnerships
  • Draft and maintain transactions-related policies, templates, trackers, and playbooks to promote best practices throughout the Network
  • Facilitate coordination between legal, science, operations, and finance teams across the CZ ecosystem to ensure seamless execution and compliance in transactional activities
  • Contribute to legal team operations and knowledge-sharing, including taking on special projects and assisting with other legal functions as necessary

What You'll Bring 

Essential –

  • Juris Doctorate
  • Active membership in the California State Bar within one year of the start date is a contingency of employment
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant in-house and law firm experience with a focus on technology transfer, transactions, and contracts, preferably in the biomedical or life sciences space
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, and social skills and good judgment
  • Strong collaboration skills, with particular emphasis on working well in a team-oriented environment and servicing a broad range of constituencies
  • Comfort engaging in technology and science related discussions with scientists and engineers
  • Willingness to travel for meetings at our offices or home institutions across the country
  • Ability to prioritize and effectively balance client expectations
  • A learning and growth mindset coupled with humility and mission-oriented sensibilities
  • Flexibility to work in a hybrid role (60% in office), primarily based out of CZI’s Redwood City office

Nice to have - 

  • Degree in STEM, such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, computer science, or engineering
  • Experience with contracts related to scientific labs and laboratory setup, such as equipment procurement and service agreements
  • Familiarity with regulations related to biomedical research and healthcare

Compensation 

The Redwood City, CA base pay range for this role is $193,000.00 - $265,100.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.
