The Trust Lands Administration seeks a qualified attorney to represent the agency in leasing, selling and managing trust lands.  

Roles and Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the attorney include, but are not limited to:
  • Negotiating and drafting documents in support of real estate development transactions, including leases, purchase and sale agreements, easements and patents.
  • Advising TLA's business groups (whose work involved real estate development, energy projects, and surface leasing and sales) on a variety of matters, including existing contractual rights and obligations, land use and development issues, statutory and regulatory requirements, and procurement matters.
  • Representing the agency and the Board of Trustees in matters appealed to the Board of Trustees.
  • Working with the business groups to ensure compliance with applicable administrative rules and to revise those rules as needed.
The position will be based in the Trust Land Administration's Salt Lake City office.

Minimum Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing of the Utah Bar or active membership in good standing of another state bar and eligible for admission by motion into the Utah Bar pursuant to Rule 14-705.
  • An interest in real property issues.
  • Background in transactional matters involving land.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Ideal Candidate
  • At least five years' experience as an attorney advising on and drafting documents for real estate or natural resource transactions.
  • Experience in land use and zoning law.
  • Experience in natural resources law.
  • Litigation experience.
  • Familiarity with environmental law.
What is the Trust Lands Administration?
The Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration ("TLA") manages approximately 3.3 million acres of surface lands and 4.4 million acres of minerals exclusively for the economic benefit of public schools and other important state institutions.  TLA generates revenue through its business groups which oversee real estate development, oil, gas, mining and renewable energy development, and special use leasing, grazing and other surface development.  Please visit trustlands.utah.gov for additional information.

  • A Juris Doctorate is required.
