Job Description

The Department of Labor and Industry is seeking a hardworking and motivated Medical Fee Review Hearing Officer to join our team in Workers' Compensation Office of Adjudication. In this role, you will help us oversee the adjudication process and handle disputes about workers' compensation claims. In this position, you will be responsible for scheduling and conducting quasi-judicial hearings to adjudicate medical fee review appeals. Your work will involve reviewing appeals, scheduling and conducting de novo hearings, examining witnesses, receiving and analyzing testimony and exhibits, and ruling on evidence and administrative procedure. You will also issue written decisions and orders that are subject to appeal at Commonwealth Court. Some of your duties will include researching existing case law and regulations, issuing subpoenas requiring the appearance of witnesses or the production of documents, and taking sworn testimony after administering oaths. Additionally, you will track decisions appealed to the Commonwealth and Supreme Courts.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. This may change based on operational needs.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time after the successful completion of the required probationary period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of professional experience in investigative, adjudicative, or legal work analyzing and interpreting information to issue decisions, findings of fact, or determinations of eligibility, or to engage in litigation, and a bachelor’s degree; or
  • Graduation with a law degree from a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
