- The Utah Office of the Attorney General has an immediate opening for a Section Director to supervise the Insurance Fraud Section as part of the Justice Division leadership team. Incumbent in this position is responsible for three employees: two Assistant Attorneys General and one Judicial Assistant.
Section Director - Insurance Fraud Section, Justice Division
The Section Director assigns cases, reviews work product - both oral advocacy skills and written submissions, provides feedback to section members as needed, reviews and makes decisions regarding section member requests for travel, training, annual and sick leave and provides mentoring and guidance to section members to ensure high quality legal work, handles basic personnel issues in consultation with the division director, and conducts semi-annual performance evaluations with section members. The Section Director also handles a case load, represents the Office and division as needed in legislative committee hearings, and makes presentations on human trafficking and other related subjects as directed by the Attorney General and the Division Director.
This position includes a $5,000 annual pay increase during the time the employee serves as a Section Director. - Responsibilities
Prepares cases by conducting legal research and gathering evidence.
Provides consultation, makes recommendations, gives appropriate advice, and/or facilitates decisions.
Determine needs in discovery, and/or completes discovery; participates in decision making and strategy sessions in preparing cases for court and determining evidence to be used.
Writes or drafts correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
Manage Attorneys assigned to the Insurance Fraud Section, including training and mentoring, and oversee case workload within the Section.
Provide legal counsel and advice to law enforcement Investigators.
Maintain an entire criminal caseload, including screening criminal cases and prosecuting criminal cases in courts throughout the State of Utah.
Attend and participate in Staff Meetings
Receives, researches and responds to incoming questions or complaints; provides information, explains policy and procedures, and/or facilitates a resolution.
Conduct conferences with defendants and/or attorneys and negotiate settlements.
May be required to travel to various locations and stay overnight.

- Supplemental Information
- A Juris Doctorate is required.
- Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
- A conditional offer of employment will be made pending a satisfactory completion of a background investigation.
- Active membership in the Utah State Bar.
- Must be able to travel as required.
- Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA 53-3-202(1)(a).
- Base salary is calculated based on initial Bar admittance year, less any years not practicing law, as outlined below. The chart below does not include $5,000 annual management increase for Section Directors or any applicable grade or loyalty increases for existing employees.
