Job Description

Fall 2025 Volunteer Coordination Intern (IINE Lowell)

The International Institute of New England is a 501(c)(3) non-profit serving refugees and immigrants in Boston, MA, Lowell, MA, and Manchester, NH. The Institute offers internships to students, graduate students, and recent graduates with demonstrated interest or experience in supporting refugee, asylee, and immigrant populations. Each internship includes an educational component, through which interns contextualize their experience and reflect on their service.

All internships are unpaid and correspond roughly with the US semester system.

  • Fall Internship: September through December 2025.

First consideration is given to applicants that can commit at least 16 hours per week over the course of the semester outlined above. Applicants are encouraged to apply regardless of whether their schedule fits the semester system; IINE makes exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Slots fill quickly and candidates are encouraged to apply earlier than the requested date above.

Please note that this internship will be a hybrid format, meaning that some in-person hours at our Lowell, MA. office are required.

Overview Volunteer Coordination Intern (IINE Lowell)

This position provides interns experience with both resettlement work and volunteer coordination work. It is a combination of working with clients and volunteers as well as some administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

Thursday Duties:

  • Support weekly food delivery by helping with sorting and distributing items, including feminine hygiene products

  • Optional: Interns may assist with driving if interested and eligible

  • Present a bi-weekly food education session to ESOL students, which includes:

    • Preparing and delivering a PowerPoint presentation

    • Demonstrating food items and basic cookware from that week's delivery

  • Provide English tutoring to IINE youth (ages 1525) as part of the youth tutoring program

    • Interns will receive training and all necessary materials

Additional Responsibilities (on other weekdays):

  • Log volunteer hours and maintain accurate records

  • Assist in assembling the monthly volunteer newsletter

  • Conduct volunteer satisfaction surveys

  • Distribute the youth tutoring schedule to tutors twice per week

Required Skills & Abilities
  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team

  • Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel is helpful

  • Organized, dependable, and comfortable engaging with diverse populations

Education & Experience
  • Previous experience volunteering or working with volunteers is helpful but not required

  • Interest in education, youth programs, or community services is a plus
