We are looking for an Attorney to join our DCFS Team in Lake Charles Region, Calcasieu Parish.  This position requires an extraordinary amount of trial work involving regular and frequent court appearances. The incumbent must be thoroughly familiar with all rules and regulations for  the courts of various parishes and must have considerable experience and  background to meet the demands and requirements for complicated issues in the litigation process.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Incumbent is frequently before tribunals at the state levels, federal level and administrative tribunals.
  • Extensive trial work includes, but not limited to, child abuse case review hearings, dispositional review hearings, adoption proceedings, and termination of parental right trials.
  • Incumbents has a high volume of cases involving: child in need of care proceedings, termination of parental rights trials, Social Security appeals, subpoenaed records/testimony, confidentiality issues, child custody issues, motions for expungements, motions and orders to establish trusts, and motions to appoint counsel for children in civil cases. 
  • Incumbent prepares staff and represents CWS in mediations involving the department as requested. 
  • Incumbent make public appearances and presentations on behalf of the agency as requested by agency management and/or the judiciary.
  • Incumbent recommends and participates in efforts to update and revise provisions in state and federal law in the areas of Child Welfare. 

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a probational appointment or a job appointment that may last up to 48 months. Job appointments may convert to probational appointments. Also, it may be filled as a detail and promoted within 12 months or by promotion of a permanent classified employee.

Career Progression:  May be filled as an Attorney 1-3 depending on qualifications.

Work Schedule:  Typically, work hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday.  Flexible work schedules are available after meeting certain criteria and is dependent upon the position you are applying for.  Some positions require working shifts.  


Location: Calcasieu Parish

Compensation: Special Entrance Rates have been established for Attorney job titles. The referenced positions are also eligible for premium pay of up to $2.00 per hour for hours work based on specific criteria.

  • Attorney 1 $27.08 hourly (AS-619)

  • Attorney 2 $28.98 hourly (AS-620)

  • Attorney 3 $33.18 hourly (AS-622)
