Job Description

This position is located within the Department of Justice, Justice Management Division (JMD), Security and Emergency Planning Staff (SEPS), and reports to the Director, SEPS. The incumbent serves as Deputy Director, SEPS, and is responsible for agencywide security policy, SEPS day-to-day operations, and oversight of the classified information, physical security, emergency preparedness, litigation security, and personnel security programs.

Duties

This position is located in Washington D.C. The Deputy Director of Security serves as a career Senior Executive and functions as the principal deputy to the Director of Security. The Deputy Director exercises delegated executive authority for the Department's enterprise-wide security programs, including classified information security.

The Deputy Director provides executive leadership, policy direction, and day-to-day operational oversight of national security, personnel security, physical security, industrial security, emergency preparedness and continuity, insider threat mitigation, and litigation security programs. The incumbent directs subordinate senior leaders and specialized security professionals responsible for safeguarding classified and sensitive information, facilities, personnel, and judicial proceedings across the Department.

The position shares full executive accountability with the Director for ensuring compliance with Executive Orders governing classified information, Intelligence Community Directives, Department of Justice regulations, and statutory authorities, including the Classified Information Procedures Act (CIPA), 18 U.S.C. App. III.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Security Leadership & Oversight: Serving as senior security advisor to the Director of Security and Assistant Attorney General for Administrationoverseeing DOJ-wide personnel, information, and physical security programs. Directing enterprise security clearance, insider threat, and continuous evaluation programs. Leading COOP planning, facility security, and emergency preparedness initiatives.
  • Policy Development & Compliance: Developing, implementing, and monitoring DOJ-wide security policies. Ensuring compliance with federal laws, Executive Orders, and directives. Conducting audits, risk assessments, and program evaluations to maintain operational readiness and policy alignment.
  • Program Management & Implementation: Overseeing deployment of security programs across all DOJ components. Coordinating with human capital, IT, facilities, and law enforcement to integrate security measures. Establishing performance metrics and ensuring agency-wide adoption of best practices.
  • Supervisory & Managerial Duties: Leading, mentoring, and evaluating staff; managing workflow, budgets, training, and organizational priorities. The incumbent ensures staff compliance with security and safety standards.
  • Interagency Coordination & Representation: Representing DOJ in national security forums, councils, and interagency initiatives. As Deputy Director, the incumbent collaborates with federal partners and responds to oversight inquiries related to security programs.

Salary
  • $151,661 - $228,000/year

Conditions of Employment:

  1. You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  2. Veterans' preference is not applicable to the Senior Executive Service.
  3. Selective Service registration is required for males born on, or after, December 31st, 1959. Those not registered should have an approved exemption on file.
  4. You will be required to complete a pre-employment security investigation and background check for the security level designated for this position.
  5. You will be required to undergo a drug screening and obtain favorable results prior to being appointed.
  6. You may be subject to a one-year probationary period effective from the date in which you are appointed.
  7. This position requires you to submit a Public Financial Disclosure Report (OGE 278) upon entry, and annually thereafter in accordance with DOJ and Federal ethics guidelines.

As a basic requirement for entry into the SES, applicants must provide evidence of progressively responsible leadership experience that is indicative of senior executive level management capability and directly related to the skills and abilities outlined under the Mandatory Technical Qualifications and Executive Core Qualifications.

For this position, the following Mandatory Technical Qualifications (MTQs) have been established and should be addressed within the resume application.


1. MTQ 1: Executive leadership of enterprise security programs across multiple disciplines to include personnel security, physical security, industrial security, emergency preparedness and continuity, information security, and litigation security programs.
2. MTQ 2: Executive experience advising senior officials on high-risk security matters.
3. MTQ 3: Executive experience in security policy development and/or security compliance oversight, and implementation.
