The City of Hampton is seeking a passionate and service-oriented Law Fellow to join the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. This position provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable courtroom and litigation experience while serving the public interest and supporting justice in our community.
Minimum Requirements- Requires graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence degree within the last 18 months from date of application OR must be within third year of law school and have a Third-Year Practice Certificate.
- Law intern experience in criminal prosecution preferred.
- The candidate is expected to sit for the Virginia Bar Exam during the period closest to their graduation date from law school. The candidate will be given the opportunity to take the Bar Exam no more than twice, consecutively, and is expected to pass the Bar Exam during that period while employed in this role.
- Must successfully pass a background check related to this position.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.

What YOU will be doing: Under the supervision of an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, prepares, researches, and prosecutes criminal cases involving misdemeanors and felonies for trial in all courts. Conducts phone calls and meetings with police officers. Utilizes knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of criminal law to thoroughly and accurately prepare cases for trial. Conducts witness interviews; prepares witnesses for trial in a timely manner; ensures witnesses are apprised of resources available to them. Under the supervision of an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, exercises creativity and skillful negotiating tactics in resolving cases. Keeps supervisor apprised of status of assigned cases. Researches legal issues. Utilizes appropriate resources, meets deadlines, prepares and reviews files in an adequate and timely manner. Recognizes issues relating to specific cases, recognizes strengths and weaknesses of cases, and effectively expresses himself/herself both orally and in writing. Adheres to the Rules of Professional Responsibility for Attorneys. Responds to inquires in a timely manner exercising good customer service skills. Recognizes and responds to the concerns of support staff. Demonstrates regular and punctual attendance. Performs other related duties as required.
