The City Attorney’s Office is seeking a highly experienced and skilled legal professional to serve as a Senior Assistant City Attorney – Police. This position performs a wide variety of legal assignments ranging from complex to highly sensitive matters, with a strong focus on municipal law and police-related legal issues.

About the Role:

This position performs professional legal work involving research, analysis, and preparation of complex legal documents and pleadings. The Senior Assistant City Attorney – Police manages multiple projects, assignments, and cases of the most difficult, complex, and sensitive nature simultaneously.


This role requires a high level of expertise in municipal law, civil litigation, and police-related legal matters. The position works independently with limited supervision and provides leadership, training, and oversight to Assistant City Attorneys, paralegals, and other staff within the City Attorney’s Office.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal counsel and representation related to police operations, policies, and procedures
  • Handle complex civil litigation, including matters filed in state and federal courts
  • Conduct advanced legal research and analysis
  • Draft, review, and finalize complex legal documents, contracts, ordinances, and agreements
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal constitutional and statutory provisions affecting municipalities
  • Represent the City in court proceedings, hearings, negotiations, and administrative matters
  • Supervise, mentor, and train Assistant City Attorneys, paralegals, and support staff
  • Develop and deliver legal training within areas of subject-matter expertise

Qualifications

What You Bring:
Minimum Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD)
  • Seven (7) to nine (9) years of progressively responsible legal experience, including civil litigation
  • Active license to practice law in the State of North Carolina
  • Admission to practice in Federal Court, “OR” eligibility to obtain admission within 2 months period established timeframe
  • Valid Driver’s License


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising or representing police departments or public safety agencies
  • Extensive experience with municipal or governmental civil litigation
  • Prior supervisory, mentoring, or lead attorney experience
