
Senior Counsel - Corporate Legal
Insurance Operations Division See More Job Openings by This EmployerThis position will provide a wide range of internal legal services, operating in a fast-past and highly visible environment. This position will advise one or more operational departments and perform duties such as drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, providing opinions, and advising Citizens management and staff on legal issues and transactions.
Job Duties:
Models’ ethical behavior and execute job responsibilities in accordance with Citizen’s core values, ethics, and information protection policies.
Provide legal services in various areas of concentration such as:
- Contract drafting and negotiations, procurement, competitive bid process, outsourcing, licensing, intellectual property, information technology, and real estate leasing.
- General corporate transactions, accounting and corporate finance, underwriting, agency services, and employment law.
- Corporate secretarial function, e.g., board and corporate records.
- Property insurance, reinsurance, and other corporate insurance.
- Litigation supervision, including management of outside counsel and recommendation of selection of outside counsel.
- Sunshine law, public records, record retention, privacy.
General Responsibilities:
- Perform advanced research and analysis in areas of law and policy, often involving novel & complex issues.
- Draft and edit form letters, pleadings, motions, and discovery.
- Prepare reports and legal opinions on relevant issues as directed.
- Provide other high-level legal services as directed by the General Counsel and other Legal management.
Other Unit Support:
- Provide legal advice, strategies, solutions, and guidance to senior management, other managers and employees on implications of proposed & existing regulations, policies, practices, and problems.
Training: Prepare and present training on pertinent legal issues.
Knowledge Required:
- Comprehensive knowledge in administrative law, government contract, procurement law, or government law.

- Advanced skills in legal analysis, critical thinking, legal counseling, and problem solving; creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems; good legal and business judgment.

- Ability to handle sensitive and critical information appropriately
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Relevant Experience – The minimum years of experience required.
7 or more years of relevant experience in a firm, corporate, or government setting, of which at least 5 years should be in general civil litigation, administrative law, insurance, corporate law, and/or contract law.
Education Required:
- High School Diploma | GED
- Bachelor’s Degree OR 3 years relevant experience, OR a combination of college education and relevant experience equivalent to 3 years.
- ** Additional education may count towards experience. **
Other Certifications | Licenses Required:
- J.D. degree and admitted to Florida Bar
Preferred Experience/Education:
- 10 years of insurance law or contract law or corporate law
- Experience in interfacing with insurance related agencies, such as the Florida Department of Financial Services and Office of Insurance Regulation experience
- Previous legal experience in Property and Casualty insurance
- Experience with Florida homeowners and commercial property insurance
- Comprehensive knowledge of Florida Rules of Civil Procedure, Florida Rules of Evidence and Florida Rules of Appellate Procedure
- Knowledge of Florida laws governing and regulating insurers
