Purpose:
Assist the Legal Department in supporting Insurance Operations, Sales, and Compliance, with a primary focus on structured settlement annuity transactions. This role supports legal functions related to structured settlement annuity new business processing, contract administration, claims handling, and external inquiries. The ideal candidate will have experience with structured settlement annuity transactions with excellent attention to detail, the ability to interpret and analyze court orders, settlement agreements, and qualified assignment forms. The candidate must demonstrate effective communication skills with internal and external business partners while managing time-sensitive tasks with professionalism and accuracy.Accountabilities:
Under the direction of the supervising paralegal or attorneys, the Structured Settlements Paralegal will:
Structured Settlement Responsibilities
- Review and maintain documentation related to structured settlement annuities, including Qualified Assignments, court orders, and settlement agreements.
- Analyze and verify structured settlement paperwork for compliance with federal laws (e.g., IRC §104(a)(2), §130) and applicable state statutes.
- Coordinate with Operations, Claims, and third-party partners (e.g., brokers, attorneys, defense counsel) to ensure accurate and timely annuity issuance.
- Review of judicial approval for settlements involving minors, incapacitated individuals, or wrongful death claims.
- Maintain structured settlement regulatory reference materials and assist with internal training documentation.
General Legal and Operational Support
- Review, investigate, analyze, and help facilitate responses to legal referrals and inquiries from Operations, Sales, Product Development, and Compliance personnel.
- Conduct legal research and summarize findings on applicable state and federal statutes, regulations, and legal precedents related to annuity products and structured settlements.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or paralegal certification or equivalent educational or employment experience.
- 3+ years of experience in a legal or insurance environment; experience in structured settlement business or structured settlement annuities strongly preferred.
- Understanding of the legal and regulatory framework governing structured settlements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and case/document management system
- Strong legal research and analytical skills; ability to interpret statutes, court decisions, and settlement documentation.
- Ability to summarize legal and factual findings for review by supervising paralegal, attorneys and business leaders.
- High attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple complex matters in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to build relationships and work effectively with individuals at all levels across the organization and with external stakeholders.
- Professional demeanor, self-motivated, adaptable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- High ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality and discretion.
