Job Description

The Senior Environmental Counsel will provide sophisticated, best-in-class EHS advice primarily to the company’s mining operations in Florida.  The attorney will counsel, guide, and support the organization on federal, state, and local EHS regulatory matters and permitting essential to those operations.

What will you do?

  • Provide expert counsel on core federal environmental laws, including the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Clean Water Act (in particular, Sections 404 and 402) and analogous state laws.

  • Advise on land use designations and approvals supporting mining activities.

  • Counsel the business on federal health and safety compliance under programs administered by MSHA and OSHA.

  • Supervise and manage outside counsel and consultants assisting on controversies and regulatory and permitting matters.

  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with internal stakeholders and regulators.

What do you need for this role?

  • Juris Doctorate from accredited law school

  • 10+ years of environmental law experience in a law firm or corporate law department with federal wetlands experience permitting, including working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. 

  • Extensive knowledge of federal environmental laws.

  • Member in good standing of state bar.

  • Wetlands permitting in Florida.

  • Working knowledge of MSHA and OSHA requirements.

  • Judicial and administrative litigation experience.

  • Strong oral, written, presentation, and listening communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills required to build and maintain trust with internal teams and regulators.

  • Ability to communicate well with senior leaders.

  • Proven project management and leadership skills.

  • Ability to work within and lead diverse teams. 

  • Goal-oriented and self-motivated.

  • Ability to work as a member of a high-performing team in a dynamic environment.

  • Desire to work directly with the company’s operational, land management and EHS professionals.

  • Strong business acumen.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Professionalism and diplomacy

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and Teams.
