Under the general direction of the Deputy Chief or their designee, the Public Information Supervisor is responsible for directing, supervising, planning, organizing, and reviewing the work of team members who provide intake consultation assessments for all programs within the Labor Commissioner’s Office (LCO), as well as providing ongoing training and education to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures. In addition, the Public Information Supervisor collaborates with all programs and stakeholders to promote education and access for the public and bring forth labor law enforcement awareness. The incumbent also oversees a variety of special projects designed to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and customer satisfaction with LCO’s claims and/or complaint processes.
This is a first full supervisory level.
The Public Information Supervisor will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to the Mission and Vision of the Division and execute duties in a Trauma Informed approach.

The incumbent must have a lucid understanding of the California Labor Code and the Industrial Welfare Commissioner Orders as well as a sympathetic understanding of the labor problems; sound judgment; reliability; impartiality; tact; firmness; patience; neat personal appearance; professional demeanor and attire; and a willingness to travel and be able to work irregular hours. The incumbent must possess strong skills in decision making; interpersonal and leadership ability, initiative, and resourcefulness to complete tasks; conflict prevention and resolution; organizational change and time management; analytical and attention to detail; effective collaboration; researching current laws and policies; mathematical calculations; as well as proficient in Excel and other Microsoft applications. Confidentiality and discretion are required due to the nature of the documents and information handled. Provides and promotes outreach to educate the public and engages community stakeholders to address issues and build better enforcement awareness.

Public Information Unit Overview:
The Public Information Unit (PIU) is the subject matter expert in various Labor Commissioner’s Office (LCO) program areas to interview and provide dedicated consultation services to the public on the phone or in-person (walk-in assistance or appointments) at a local district office regarding newly filed claims, applications and/or reports of labor law violations. The Public Information Unit prepares and completes referrals and recommendations to the relevant program area to further process the claim, complaint, report or application filed. The Public Information Unit also coordinates and leads intake workshops or clinics.

The position is supervisory, and will supervise the following areas: San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, and Salinas.
The incumbent will work in a high-rise office building in an office setting with artificial lighting. Travel to other offices and community locations is required to meet operational business needs. This is a high-volume fast-paced position which manages staff and constantly interfaces with the public.
