The Ohio Department of Taxation is responsible for the administration of individual and business taxes across the state. Guiding our agency is the Mission Statement which explains that we are ONE TEAM providing education, innovation, outreach, and exceptional service to our customers through courtesy, accuracy, responsiveness, and equitability in each interaction.

The Ohio Department of Taxation is seeking multiple current law school students for our summer Legal Division internship.

What’s involved in being a legal intern:

As a legal intern, you will work directly with Department of Taxation attorneys in several areas, including administrative hearings, legislation, administrative rule making, and litigation. This position will allow you to connect your classroom knowledge, and tax technical training obtained during the internship, with real-world experience. Under the supervision of an attorney, you will learn and perform many of the duties expected of a full-time, entry-level attorney. We look forward to working with you!

Key duties may include:

  • Assisting with administrative hearings and drafting legal decisions on tax assessments and refund adjustments.
  • Conducting research projects that impact policy proposals and implementation.
  • Learning substantive and procedural areas of state tax law.
  • Helping provide legal advice and guidance to members of the Department regarding evolving tax practices and policies.
  • Providing input and support research to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and members of Taxation on tax matters before the Ohio Board of Tax Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court.
  • Creating educational materials on Ohio’s tax laws for use by fellow taxpayers and employees.
  • Light administrative duties, including creating digitalized case files and reviewing taxpayer financial accounts.
What’s in it for you:
  • $24 per hour, up to 40 hours a week during summer break
  • Convenient location 15 minutes north of downtown Columbus (with free parking)
  • Hands-on exposure to many of Ohio’s taxes
  • Potential for part-time work during the school year and future employment upon graduation and licensure
  • Collaborative work environment

To apply, please complete the online application at careers.ohio.gov.
