Tenant Defense Project

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm in the Skid Row neighborhood in Downtown Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, people who are disabled, and homeless veterans.
Position Description: ICLC is part of the groundbreaking Right to Counsel Coalition and countywide Stay Housed initiative that brings together more than 25 legal service providers and community-based organizations to prevent homelessness by defending homes. ICLC’s Tenant Defense Project (TDP) Paralegal is responsible for providing key legal support on unlawful detainer cases and working closely with our clients throughout our representation.
Responsibilities include:
- Conducting intakes and supporting assessment of potential full scope representation cases under the supervision of a licensed attorney
- Being the point of contact for clients to collect and review evidence and other documents, including visiting clients’ homes as needed
- Drafting correspondence, pleadings, and discovery requests under attorney supervision
- Assisting with administrative and clerical duties, including electronic filing
- Maintaining electronic case files and documents and proper documentation in our case management system
- Providing language interpretation and translation to support with legal representation
- Completing grant-related forms and processes as required by funders
- Working closely with other TDP paralegals to advise on and implement team procedures and systems
- Providing tenant education, brief services, and referrals to tenants
- Performing paralegal and other duties as assigned
Hiring Criteria: Commitment to the mission of the organization and comfortable working with all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with the general public. Ability to balance multiple tasks and duties with competing priorities. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, including meticulous notetaking and documentation skills to support client services. Self-motivated, willing to learn, ability to meet deadlines, and ability to exercise sound independent judgment. Access to reliable transportation. Written and oral Spanish language proficiency preferred for this position. A certificate in paralegal studies from an ABA-approved institution or BA/BS degree and at least 1 year of supervised law-related experience with an attorney who has been an active member of the CA State Bar for a minimum of 3 years is required. 1-5 years of experience as a Paralegal is required. At least 6+ years of experience is required for Senior Paralegal designation.
Compensation: Hourly compensation ranges from $24.54 to $37.45, depending on experience. Excellent benefits.
