Role Summary:

We are seeking a highly organized and experienced Attorney Manager to lead the financial operations related to settlements, medical liens, reductions, and disbursements in a high-volume personal injury law firm. This role requires a licensed attorney with a strong background in financial oversight, trust accounting compliance, and direct negotiation with medical providers and lien holders.

 

The ideal candidate will balance legal acumen with business efficiency, overseeing the accurate distribution of settlement proceeds, ethical trust account practices, and effective written and verbal negotiations with lien holders.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of Disbursements & Trust Accounting
    1. Manage and authorize disbursements of settlement funds from IOLTA and operating accounts
    2. Ensure all transactions comply with state bar rules and trust accounting standards
    3. Approve and oversee issuance of settlement checks to clients, providers, attorneys, and vendors
  • Direct Lien Negotiation & Resolution
    1. Personally negotiate reductions with medical providers, hospitals, insurance carriers (including Medicare, Medicaid, ERISA), and third-party lien administrators
    2. Manager a team of dedicated reduction specialists who negotiate reductions with medical providers, hospitals, insurance carriers (including Medicare, Medicaid, ERISA), and third-party lien administrators
    3. Draft and send formal written negotiation letters and conduct verbal negotiations by phone or in person
    4. Document all communications clearly and maintain accurate reduction records to support final disbursement
  • Medical Billing Review & Financial Strategy
    1. Review and audit medical billing to detect unreasonable or inflated charges
    2. Identify opportunities for savings to maximize client net recovery
    3. Develop and maintain tracking systems for lien outcomes and negotiations
  • Accounting Department Management
    1. Collaborate with internal bookkeepers and CFO to track settlement balances, liens, and payments
    2. Ensure that reconciliations and reports are completed accurately and timely
    3. Approve structured settlements, payment plans, and refund requests
  • Leadership & Staff Supervision
    1. Supervise and mentor team members including paralegals, lien negotiators, attorneys, and accounting clerks
    2. Assign tasks, conduct performance evaluations, and provide feedback on disbursement and lien negotiation strategies
    3. Lead initiatives to improve workflow efficiency and turnaround time

 

What We’re Looking For:

  1. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) - The Big 3
    • Average Time to Disbursement Post-Settlement
    • Target: 4 weeks or fewer  
    • Impact: Improves client satisfaction and reduces bottlenecks
  2. Successful Lien Reduction Rate
    • Target: Achieve monthly closing goal - 80% of reductions completed within 4 weeks
    • Impact: Increases client recovery and demonstrates negotiation effectiveness
  3. Closing Goals 
    • Target: 100% to monthly target of closing goals 
    • Impact: Improves client satisfaction and reduces bottlenecks

 

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) required, active license in good standing
  • 5+ years in personal injury law, including experience in lien resolution and accounting
  • 2+ years managerial experience, preferably overseeing legal/financial operations
  • Demonstrated experience in direct negotiation (both written and verbal) with medical providers and lien holders
  • Deep knowledge of IOLTA regulations, disbursement protocols, and medical billing/lien laws
  • Proficiency in legal and financial systems 

 

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working with Medicare, Medicaid, ERISA, and hospital lien laws
  • Strong legal writing and verbal communication skills for professional negotiations
  • Prior litigation or settlement experience a plus
  • Familiarity with lien tracking tools and settlement accounting dashboards
