The Supervising Staff Attorney provides legal expertise, leadership, and oversight to assigned program staff, ensuring high-quality legal services, compliance with program goals, and professional development of team members. In collaboration with the Program Director, Managing Supervising Legal Assistant, and co-supervising attorneys, this role is responsible for training, mentoring, case review and assignment, coordinating case coverage, and advising on office and professional practices. The Supervising Attorney also supports grant reporting, contract compliance, and performance management, serving as a resource for complex legal and procedural issues. When performance concerns arise, the Supervising Attorney works with the division director and Human Resources to implement improvement plans as needed, while balancing supervisory and administrative duties with a limited caseload of complex or high-impact matters, fostering a collaborative, client-centered work environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Oversee and support the delivery of high-quality legal representation by program attorneys and staff.
- Assist with the development and implementation of staff training, orientation programs, and ongoing professional development initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Program Director and co-supervising attorneys to determine case acceptance, assignment, and distribution of workloads.
- Conduct regular case reviews, provide substantive feedback, and ensure compliance with professional and office practice standards.
- Coordinate team and case coverage to ensure uninterrupted client service.
- Maintain a reduced caseload of complex or high-impact matters, providing strategic litigation or negotiation support.
- Assist with grant reporting, ensuring accurate documentation of program work and compliance with contract goals.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for complex legal and procedural issues, providing guidance to staff.
- Develop and implement performance assessments and corrective action plans in collaboration with the Program Director, Director of Program Strategies, and Human Resources.
- Monitor compliance with ethical obligations and applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
OTHER DUTIES
- Participate in organizational events, outreach, and community engagement activities.
- Represent the organization in professional forums, coalitions, and community partnerships as needed.
- Contribute to programmatic planning, strategic initiatives, and policy development.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned by the Program Director, the Managing Supervising Attorney, or other organizational leadership.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES
- Provide leadership, direction, and oversight to assigned attorneys, paralegals, and/or legal support staff.
- Set clear expectations, goals, and performance standards; monitor progress and hold staff accountable.
- Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-one check-ins to provide feedback, address challenges, and promote professional growth.
- Approve time-off requests and ensure adequate staffing coverage.
- Identify and address performance concerns, creating performance improvement or corrective action plans as needed.
- Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive work environment that aligns with organizational values.
- Collaborate with the Program Director on hiring, onboarding, and succession planning for program staff.
- Reviews and approves associate’s timecards and manages time off requests.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) and admission to the New York State Bar required.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant legal experience, with demonstrated leadership or supervisory responsibilities preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a language other than English preferred.
- High level of initiative, self-motivation, and organizational skills.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Strong negotiation and advocacy abilities.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills with respect for clients, colleagues, and community partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build consensus among diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency with case management systems, legal research tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Salary- $95,000 - $127,000
