MIGRANT FARMWORKER STAFF ATTORNEY
AGENCY DESCRIPTION: Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a statewide, not-for-profit organization that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through eight branch offices. ILS is funded by the Legal Services Corporation, Indiana Civil Legal Aid Fund, United Ways, Area Agencies on Aging, and many other funding sources. ILS’s migrant farmworker project has provided civil legal assistance to migrant farmworkers and other agricultural workers for more than 50 years under a federal legislative mandate.

LOCATION: This position is located in the ILS Indianapolis office. Not all the hours worked require being in the office; some work can be completed remotely.
JOB SUMMARY: The Migrant Farmworker Staff Attorney will provide legal assistance and representation to clients, focusing on employment and migrant farmworker law in all jurisdictions in the state.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Screen clients for eligibility and make referrals, as appropriate.
· Conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews with clients.
· Conduct factual investigation and analysis as well as legal research.
· Represent agricultural workers in administrative complaints and state and federal litigation.
· Draft pleadings to include complaints, answers, memoranda of law, briefs, etc.
· Oversee know-your-rights outreach to migrant farmworkers.
· Train stakeholders on identifying the legal needs of agricultural workers.
· Work with the outreach coordinator to train interns.
· Attend trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of current farmworker law issues.
· Ensure migrant farmworker outreach reaches all relevant areas of the state.
· Advise clients of results of investigation and research and counsel clients regarding their options.
· Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the essential functions of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Juris doctorate and licensed to practice law in Indiana, or ability to become licensed soon after acceptance.
· Experience working with migrant farmworkers preferred, but not required.
· Ability to travel throughout Indiana to perform job responsibilities.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Fluency in Spanish and English is required.
· Ability to establish and maintain excellent relationships with diverse populations.
COMPENSATION: Starting salary is $57,425, with a range up to a maximum of $75,535, depending on experience. ILS offers an excellent fringe benefits package including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, Rx), disability insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) plan, a flex benefit plan and generous vacation and sick leave. ILS will pay up to $2,500 in moving expenses if the successful applicant needs to move from another city to assume this position.
