Job Summary: The Library Services Supervisor, Community & Legal Connections strengthens the Library’s connection to local organizations and individuals that expand access to resources related to legal issues and procedures, research, community resources, through related programming and services. This position will expand the work of the Allegheny County Law Library to include the development of strategic partnerships, the implementation of community legal information services and programming, systemwide at CLP and across Allegheny County. The Library Services Supervisor, Community & Legal Connections will help grow CLP’s presence and reach in providing legal information for the public.

Under the direction of the Library Service Manager-ACLL, the Library Services Supervisor, Community & Legal Connections will act as a service lead for developing and implementing programs, partnerships, community legal resources, and other initiatives. To accomplish these goals the Library Services Supervisor, Community & Legal Connections will collaborate internally with staff and leaders at the ACLL and in departments and locations across the CLP system and externally with partners, presenters and individual community members.
 
Location: Allegheny County Law Library, Pittsburgh, PA.  
Work Hours:  37.5 hours Monday- Friday: evenings and weekends required when needed
Compensation: $50,000 annually

Essential Functions:
  • Understanding, advocating for and engaging with the public and legal communities to ensure legal information needs are addressed through relevant programs and services; and building these community centered services through meaningful interactions between the library and its community and among community members;
  • Developing supportive services that assist community members to navigate governmental agencies, advocate, and reduces barriers to services and programs;
  • Leading a team of legal information professionals and modeling community legal services to staff through program and service design, coaching, learning opportunities, direct and indirect work assignments, building and extending trust, and empowering staff to work to the top of their classifications to achieve the library's goals;
  • Recommending, articulating, and cultivating buy-in for a systemwide approach to legal services and partnerships that support pro-se litigants and community members;
  • Strengthening established and forming new relationships with legal resources and professionals across Allegheny County for strategic systemwide initiatives and library service design;
  • Coordinating and maintaining a sustainable programming and service structure, shared practices that encourage collaborative and responsive engagement with community members in collaboration the Office of Programmatic Services, Information & Research Services, and Communications & Creative Services departments;
  • Participating and providing leadership in system-wide activities, such as committees, teams and modeling behaviors in patron-focused service, self-directed learning, strategic thinking and planning, and personal accountability;
  • Energizing, developing, and enhancing services that heighten access to core legal information services through in-person and virtual offerings;
  • Expanding library training, tours, orientation for volunteers, staff, and community stakeholders;
  • Evaluating the success of their efforts and continuously improving programs and services to respond to changing needs through data collection, community feedback and analysis;
  • Supporting the work of ACLL, including acting as a leader for team members, assisting with library operations, serving as the person in charge, and other related duties as needed;
  • Supervising, coaching, scheduling, hiring, and evaluating Librarians and Library Services Associates;
  • Participating with the leadership team at CLP-Main, Adult Services and collaborating with other managers and supervisors in the department;
  • Regularly engaging with all CLP locations to maintain open communication;
  • Coordinating the resources to meet the needs of research requests via in-person, email, LibAnswers research queue, LibGuides, and related;
  • Preparing written and statistical reports;
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrate leadership, including the ability to resolve problems effectively;
  • Articulate and share a vision for library information services;
  • Maintain knowledge and commitment to best practices in equity, diversity and inclusion and accessibility, and how to effectively integrate them into library projects and partnerships;
  • Learn, competently use, and demonstrate technology in all forms and contribute to the development of robust virtual services and content, with an emphasis on community engagement through technological means;
  • Ability to provide quality customer service, both in-person, over the phone, and virtually;
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills;
  • Collaborate as part of a team, meet deadlines, manage assignments and responsibilities effectively in a busy urban location;
  • Committed to serving on systemwide committees and project teams, and providing support to peer colleagues across CLP and Allegheny County libraries;
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and presenting; addressing a variety of audiences from youth to professionals;
  • Committed to providing high quality customer service to a diverse public and staff in accordance with CLP’s philosophy and guidelines;
  • Ability to navigate and interpret CLP policies and procedures;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Education and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university;
  • Two years of related experience and increasing responsibility in a public library, legal non-profit or similar organization setting, including demonstrated leadership and project management;
  • One or more years in an information services, reference, or related position;
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role, supporting and coaching staff;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of non-fiction collections in a public or academic library setting including best practices for collection management of circulating non-fiction and reference collections;
  • Working knowledge of Software as a Service (SaaS), including but not limited to: Microsoft 365, Video conferencing (Teams) and library-specific applications (Springshare LibApps);
  • Demonstrated proficiency with research database products;
  • Experience successfully leading projects and programs across multiple departments, locations and work groups;
  • Relevant experience fostering and maintaining partnerships between organizations, institutions or other groups;
  • Significant experience working directly with a diverse public of all ages.
  • Knowledge of Allegheny County libraries, government, and court systems, community legal resources, bench and bar preferred.
 
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
  • Must be able to independently travel as required;
  • Must be able to work full-time hours, plus extended hours as needed, on a regular basis;
  • Must be able to sit or stand at a desk and use a computer and screen for long periods of time, up to a full workday, in an open office setting.
  • Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, libraries or meeting rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls.
