The CBJ Law Department is looking for a new Assistant Attorney I/II (Prosecutor) to join our team!

The Assistant Attorney I/II/III positions are within the partially exempt service and serve at the pleasure of the City Attorney.

The Assistant Attorney I/II performs a broad range of legal work including providing legal advice and litigating criminal matters. The position focuses primarily on criminal prosecution and providing legal guidance to the Juneau Police Department, which is estimated to account for 95% of the duties.

The workload in the CBJ Law Department is fast-paced and requires all attorneys to be computer savvy and quickly able to research relevant law and understand the relevant facts. A qualified candidate will have the ability to formulate well-reasoned arguments, be comfortable making quick decisions, and prosecute misdemeanor cases independently. The average open case load is 200 cases; with a total of 600-800 cases handled per prosecutor per year. 



ABOUT THE LAW DEPARTMENT

We have a criminal prosecution division with two prosecutors and two paralegals, and a civil division with three attorneys and one paralegal. We also have an office manager who supervises the support staff and manages the department’s budget. The municipal attorney, who is appointed by the CBJ Assembly, supervises the attorneys and provides overall direction to the office.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position generally works Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The position also alternates being on-call every other week and attending court on every other weekend. We value work-life balance, so schedule flexibility exists to accommodate weekend court. The Law Department offices are located in downtown Juneau.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Prosecuting misdemeanors and criminal infractions 
  • Participating in any court-directed program such as the Coordinated Resources Project (CRP).
  • Managing all stages of trial and appeal, including legal research, briefing, and oral argument.
  • Sharing 24/7 calls and weekend arraignments.

Minimum Qualifications

Desired Qualifications:

Assistant Attorney I - (Range 322) - $117,000.00 - $142,313.60 Annually (DOQ)
 

Education: 
Juris Doctorate required

Experience:  

Experience as a legal intern or clerk is preferred. 

Other: 
Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Alaska and be a member in good standing of the Alaska Bar.

Assistant Attorney II - (Range 324) - $133,328.00 - $142,313.60 Annually (DOQ)

 

Education: 

Juris Doctorate required.

 

Experience: 

Four (4) years of professional level legal experience as an attorney. 

 

Other: 

Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Alaska and be a member in good standing of the Alaska Bar.

APSIN Clearance: 

Please be aware – this position works directly with CBJ systems that may include assistance with a department’s Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). This requires the incumbent to submit to a pre-employment fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with adult criminal convictions will not move forward in the recruitment and selection process. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance. Final offer of employment is contingent on obtaining DPS security clearance. Background Check Authority: AS 12.62 and 13 AAC 68.215
