King William County is seeking a Deputy Commonwealth Attorney to provide professional legal services as a criminal prosecutor working within the Office of the King William County Commonwealth's Attorney. This position is a full-time (minimum 40 hours per week) salaried position; a minimum of 20 hours per week on average shall be in the role of Virginia Services, Training, Officers, Prosecution (VSTOP) Prosecutor. This position is presently partially funded by federal VSTOP program grant funds. Periodic evening work and infrequent weekend work may be required. The position reports to and serves under the direction and at the pleasure of the King William County Commonwealth's Attorney.

· Work closely with, and under the direction of, the Commonwealth's Attorney.

· Prosecute felony bench and jury trials and misdemeanor appeals before the Circuit Court.

· Prosecute felony preliminary hearings before the General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

· Prosecute misdemeanor cases before the General District Court and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

· Write briefs and memoranda on Motions filed in the Circuit Court.

· Argue Motions before the Circuit and General District Courts.

· Advise law enforcement on all legal matters involving the investigation and prosecution of criminal conduct.

· Develop and conduct formal training on Virginia laws and the United States Constitution for law enforcement.

· Advise and work with other governmental agencies and the public in coordinated efforts to ensure and enhance crime prevention and public safety.

· Make relevant presentations to community groups on law enforcement.

· Provide supervision and guidance to support staff within the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney.

· Ability to effectively communicate with the community as a representative of the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney.

· Perform related work as assigned.

VSTOP Prosecutor Responsibilities

· Minimum 20 hours/week average under the supervision of the Commonwealth's Attorney to fulfill requirements of VSTOP grant.

· Preparation for prosecution of all cases involving violent crimes against women arising in King William County, to include: providing direction to law enforcement investigations; victim and witness interviews; legal research; victim and witness testimony preparation; and trial strategy planning.

· Lead trial attorney for most cases involving violent crimes against women.

· Formulating and implementing effective outreach to members of the rural community and the Native American tribes in King William County.

· Attending and participating with the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), Domestic Violence Task Force, and the regional fatality review team. Providing those teams guidance and follow through on issues related to violence against women.

· Develop polices and training for law enforcement in better practices when working with women victims of domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault.

· Receive and provide training in Forensic Experiential Trauma Interviewing.

· Maintain proper records and generate required reporting for maintenance of VSTOP grant.

· Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university.

· Graduation from an accredited law school or completion of all necessary requirements in legal education program after having read Virginia law.

· Must be an active member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar and hold a license in good standing from the Virginia Supreme Court.

· A minimum of three (3) years of previous experience as a prosecutor or as a practicing criminal law attorney.

·Five (5) years or more of experience preferred.

· Experience and/or training that include office procedures, use of modern office equipment and computer software and employment within a demanding legal work environment.

·Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check.
