About the team and position
Carvana’s Litigation Team is a high-performing group of attorneys, analysts, and e-discovery professionals who partner closely with every corner of the business. As Litigation Counsel, you will immediately take ownership of meaningful matters across our fast-growing consumer, commercial, regulatory, and securities portfolios. A portion of our docket is handled in-house, giving you the unique chance to brief motions, take discovery, and directly resolve disputes while still leveraging and managing top-tier outside counsel for the balance of the work. Our practice is deeply integrated with technology, automation, and AI—so if you are a self-starter who is curious, adaptable, and energized by solving novel problems in an opaque environment, you will thrive here and help us continue redefining how in-house litigation is done.
This role is in-person, Monday-Friday at our corporate headquarters in Tempe, Arizona.
What you’ll be doing
- Own a portfolio of nationwide litigation and arbitration matters—from case intake through final resolution—spanning single-plaintiff lawsuits, class actions, regulatory investigations, and securities claims.
- Develop and execute strategic, cost-effective case plans that balance insourced work with outside counsel engagement; draft key pleadings, discovery, and briefs where appropriate, and provide real-time guidance to business stakeholders.
- Select, supervise, and evaluate outside counsel; drive alignment on strategy, budget, and performance while ensuring consistent, business-focused advice.
- Monitor litigation trends, emerging regulations, and industry developments; translate learnings into proactive risk-mitigation and process-improvement recommendations for senior leadership.
- Intake, analyze, and respond to questions from internal business units on a daily basis that touch on the company’s litigation or dispute risk profile.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by mentoring team members, sharing best practices, and championing innovative legal operations tools and approaches.
What you should know
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
- 3 to 5 years of hands-on litigation experience—ideally in both law firm and in-house settings—handling consumer, commercial, regulatory, and/or securities matters in federal and state courts, arbitration, and/or agency proceedings.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage all phases of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, motion practice, negotiations, and trial or hearing preparation.
- Sophisticated verbal and written communication skills capable of building strong relationships and communicating effectively with stakeholders at every level and function of the organization.
- Collaborative team player with exceptional judgment, business acumen, and ability to quickly assess business challenges, make timely, pragmatic recommendations under pressure, and identify, prioritize, and resolve issues quickly and independently.
- Comfort with ambiguity and rapid change; a self-starter who is curious, tech-savvy, adaptable, and able to prioritize effectively and manage multiple tight deadlines in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Practical familiarity with e-discovery platforms, data analytics, and other legal-tech tools; enthusiasm for leveraging technology and AI to drive efficiency and improve outcomes.
