The WA State Attorney General’s Office’s Government Compliance and Enforcement Division (GCE) seeks applicants for an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) for the Administrative Litigation Team (ALT) within GCE’s Advice and Compliance Section. 


GCE’s 58 attorneys and professional staff are located on the Capitol Campus with direct access to downtown Olympia and the beautiful State Capitol grounds. GCE provides legal services to nearly 40 state agencies, boards, and commissions, including those that protect citizens by regulating a variety of professions and industries. The division’s legal practice allows for a variety of flex schedules and telecommuting options.

Duties

The AAG will primarily represent the Criminal Justice Training Commission, the agency responsible for investigating certified peace officers and corrections officers and seeking certification revocation or other sanctions from those officers when appropriate. The AAG may also litigate cases for the team’s other clients, which include the Public Disclosure Commission, the Office of Minority and Woman’s Business Enterprises and the Certified Professional Guardianship and Conservatorship Board.


The successful candidate will be part of a team of four AAGs who mostly appear before administrative forums, while also handling some cases in Superior Court and the state’s appellate courts under the judicial review provisions of the Administrative Procedure Act (APA). Typical legal work within the team involves writing, presenting and responding to motions, interviewing and presenting witnesses, providing client advice related to the litigation, evaluating cases for settlement possibilities, and appearing for status conferences or hearings. The candidate may also serve as a backup to other Advice and Compliance Section clients, which include the Secretary of State, the Insurance Commissioner, and the State Auditor. Final client assignments will be dependent on experience, interest, and division needs, and can change over time, allowing attorneys to gain experience with a wide variety of client agencies and areas of the law.

Qualifications

This is a full-time position that involves occasional travel, depending on hearing locations. In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, we seek an attorney who:


  • Has a demonstrated commitment to public service;
  • Has litigation experience at the administrative, state and/or federal level;
  • Has a strong interpersonal, analytical, and writing skills; 
  • Has the ability to prioritize and multi-task;
  • Has the ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships; and 
  • Has a willingness to join a diverse, creative and collaborative work environment.

Experience with the APA is preferred but not required. Prior experience with the team’s clients is not required as the successful candidate will have the opportunity to be mentored by other AAGs as they grow into their new role. 


Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission by motion will also be considered.) Supplemental Information

This AAG position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General (AWAAG) / Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) AFSCME Council 28, AFL-CIO. AAG salaries are set between $76,752 and $149,508.
