
The Paralegal I, Bankruptcy position will support the legal department. This is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure within the financial services industry working alongside senior management. The Paralegal I will be expected to operate in various capacities including legal, compliance, and corporate administration, with an added focus on more high-level administrative tasks, the ability to work independently, and a knowledge of relevant areas of the law applicable to Kapitus or Kapitus’s business. The ideal candidate is someone with prior paralegal experience in bankruptcy and litigation matters. This role requires an independent thinker who is self-motivated, willing to learn, energetic, detail oriented, works well under deadlines, adaptive and able to exercise independent judgment to evaluate, address and escalate matters as appropriate. This position is based in the NYC office.
What you will do:
- Maintain and update merchant bankruptcy case and complex litigation files in Kapitus’s internal database system of record ensuring accuracy and completeness
- Review and address legal documents, such as subpoenas, UCC notices, bankruptcy filings and notices, litigation filings and notices, and other documents mailed to, or served on, Kapitus. Upload to system of record and distribute to counsel and other stakeholders as appropriate
- Analyze merchant bankruptcy cases and complex litigation including, without limitation, Kapitus fraud claims, the extent, validity, priority and amount of secured creditor liens, asset and liability evaluation, collectability of Kapitus claims, successor liability, fraudulent and preferential transfers, and recovery of collateral
- Draft, review, and file legal documents such as proof of claims, notices to the court, complaints, motions, and affidavits
- Assist attorneys in preparing, drafting and filing bankruptcy and complex litigation legal documents such as pleadings, motions, objections, affidavits, discovery requests and responses
- Coordinate communication with counsel, courts, merchants, and other relevant parties in connection with bankruptcy and complex litigation proceedings
- Collaborate with retained counsel on active legal matters
- Collaborate with internal teams to gather necessary information and documentation for bankruptcy and complex litigation proceedings
- Organize and prepare documentation to update legal, collections, and litigation teams as well as outside counsel on current and pending cases
- Manage deadlines and calendar to ensure timely filing of documents and compliance with court requirements
- Provide support in connection with bankruptcy hearings, trials, and other legal proceedings as required
- Various administrative work such as organizing and updating the internal database system and managing attorney communications
- Collaborating with collections on matters regarding bankruptcies, receiverships, estates, and complex litigation
What we’re looking for:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred with a concentration in Paralegal Studies or equivalent experience required
- Paralegal certificate preferred or equivalent experience required
- 3+ years of Paralegal experience preferably in bankruptcy creditor litigation
- Ability to problem-solve and exercise independent judgement
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize projects and complete multiple tasks on schedule
- Ability to work productively under minimal supervision in a deadline-driven environment
- Proactive team player able to work efficiently during periods of ambiguity
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues at all levels across the organization
- Highly organized, precise, proactive, and capable of shifting attention quickly and accurately from one matter to another
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
- Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills
- Strong sense of accountability and attention to detail
Additional Required Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Pacer, and E-Courts (NYSCEF and other similar systems)
- Experience drafting legal documents
- Experience with litigation or bankruptcy matters
- Experience with UCC filings
