The Firm seeks an entry-level Paralegal. Although the Paralegal will be the Firm’s “Tax Paralegal,” 90%+ of this individual’s responsibilities will be working for the firm’s nonprofit pro bono clients.
Responsibilities
- Being the primary contact for the firm’s nonprofit pro bono clients. These clients span the entire spectrum of the nonprofit world, including, museums, arts organizations, nonprofit news publications, organizations that help sick children and their families, poverty and hunger relief organizations, veterans support organizations, and organizations that provide educational opportunities for the underprivileged;
- Drafting certificates of incorporation and bylaws for start-up charities;
- Completing IRS Forms 1023 applications seeking recognition of tax-exempt status for start-up charities;
- Doing substantive research into federal, state and city tax laws, and not-for-profit corporate and charitable solicitations laws for multiple states;
- Registering start-up charities to do business and solicit for donations in multiple states;
- Preparing dissolution petitions and filing to dissolve not-for-profits in multiple states;
- Drafting resolutions for not-for-profits;
- Assisting with a variety of legal questions for start-up not-for-profits in all areas of the law (e.g., employment, privacy, intellectual property);
- Assisting with a variety of matters for “paying clients;”
- Coordinating the tax department’s CLE lunches.
Qualifications
- Recent college graduate with a B.A. or B.S. degree from a 4 year college.
- Academically accomplished with excellent organizational skills.
- Willing to make a two-year commitment.
- Available to work considerable overtime when required, including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work well under pressure in a team environment and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
This position will require physical presence in Proskauer’s offices on a regular basis (at least 3x per week, or more, if it becomes the policy of the Firm or as business needs require). The anticipated compensation for this position is $63,000 per year. The actual salary offered will be based on a number of factors including but not limited to the qualifications of the applicant, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
