Job Description

The Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor has an opening for a Trial Preparation Assistant (Paralegal) within the Discovery Litigation and Compliance Unit. Trial Preparation Assistants in DLU serve as a centralized discovery resource and provide a wide-range of highly skilled support to members of the office.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Communicate and acquire documents from other government agencies such as: NYPD, Department of Justice and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
  • Assist with associating any NYPD related discovery with an arrest and notifying ADAs of new material
  • Independently identify missing items and coordinate retrieval of items
  • Compile, analyze, redact and reproduce case documents under specific time constraints
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines and adapt to changes in workflow processes
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, court and law enforcement representatives and witnesses
  • Maintaining, processing and reviewing law enforcement disclosure materials
  • Draft legal documents such as subpoenas
  • Accurately perform legal research
  • Secure, listen to and transcribe phone calls from the Department of Corrections
  • Maintain and track information in electronic files and databases in an accurate manner
  • Travel outside the office to other locations and agencies, when required
  • Perform related administrative and clerical tasks

Qualifications:

  • Must have excellent organization, communication, writing and problem solving skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to follow directions and apply proper policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Must be able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Knowledgeable about e-discovery procedures
  • Comfortable with interviewing witnesses when deemed necessary
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access); editing, redacting and converting documents in Adobe and experience using Lexis/Nexis and Westlaw application
  • Must have strong attention to detail and a high concern for data accuracy
  • Fluency in a foreign language is helpful but not necessary
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in a related field of study with a minimum of one year of legal work experience required; or approved certificate in Paralegal Studies with extensive legal work experience
