Job Description

The Coordinating Counsel oversees the strategic management of Healthcare Professional Liability (HPL) claims, ensuring early identification of high-risk exposures and guiding involvement strategies. This role builds key relationships across internal teams, agents, policyholders, and counsel, while serving as a subject matter expert in settlement negotiations and claim resolution best practices.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Establish the optimal approach to the management of all HPL claim
  • Where there is an SIR or reinsurance agreement, develop a system for early identification of claims which could potentially expose MAGMUTUAL
  • Using this early identification mechanism, develop the ideal strategy for when and how to get involved in the management of such claims
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the MAGMUTUAL Capital Solutions Team
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key Agents 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key policyholders 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with necessary external counsel
  • Train and develop the requisite skillset in the wider MAGMUTUAL team as to managing HPL claims
  • Act as a subject matter expert in settlement negotiation, guiding internal teams on best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree ; Juris Doctor (JD) ; and active law license required.
  • 15+ years of experience in claims management, insurance adjusting, or medical malpractice litigation.
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a complex claims, legal, or risk management setting, with the ability to mentor and develop high-performing teams and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and work closely with executive leadership.
  • Ability to analyze complex data sets to identify trends, risks, and opportunities in claims performance.
  • Demonstrated success managing high-severity, complex claims for large accounts.
  • Proven track record of building and leading high-performing claims teams.
  • Experience with litigation management, catastrophic loss handling, and complex coverage analysis.
  • Proficiency in claims management software (e.g., Oasis), Excel, and data visualization tools (Qlik Sense or similar).
  • Strong understanding of reserve management, defense cost containment, and financial oversight of claims. Strong strategic acumen and critical thinking skills, with the ability to recognize potential liability issues and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing multiple priorities effectively, while adapting to change.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying complex information to diverse stakeholders, including executives and Board members.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying current on state, federal, and industry trends.
