Title: Paralegal  (Housing)

Reports To: Director of Litigation 

FLSA: Non- Exempt 


The starting salary for a Paralegal (Housing) is $55,000-$80,000


Essential Functions:   

Paralegals provide supportive legal work to staff attorneys for their representation of eligible clients in all areas of poverty law. This work includes: 

  • Providing needed support for staff attorneys or paraprofessionals in the area of housing court and housing law, as assigned 
  • Providing backup for other paralegals, as needed, to help cover leaves and vacations 
  • Conduct initial interviews of applicants to assist with determination of services 
  • Maintains client relationships through frequent contact 
  • Assists clients in preparing affidavits, expense lists, discovery responses and other information necessary to the case 
  • Updates attorney and client with new information; 
  • Drafts correspondence; drafts and files petitions, motions, affidavits, legal memoranda, discovery documents, settlement proposals, orders, and other pleadings; 
  • Arranges for and monitors service of documents 
  • Obtains settings for court hearings, maintains contact with court administration as necessary 
  • Manages files including deadline tracking 
  • Participate in clinics, outreach and legal education activities as directed by organization standards 
  • Remain in compliance with timekeeping expectations, LSC standards for the provision of legal advice, federal regulations, and other policies 
  • Reliable and timely attendance to complete all job duties  
  • Special projects, as assigned


Qualifications:  

  • College degree in relevant field or graduation from a paralegal program or significant, demonstrated experience in the essential functions of this position 
  • Experience as a paralegal in a legal aid setting strongly preferred 
  • Formal training or demonstrated ability to conduct accurate, efficient, and thorough legal research 
  • Demonstrated strong legal writing skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly analyze and spot legal issues 
  • Excellent professional judgment 
  • Strong knowledge of legal processes and procedures 
  • Ability to work independently and with others as part of the legal team 
  • Clear communicator and good interpersonal skills 
  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills 
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of eligible client groups with empathy and sensitivity 
  • Technical aptitude and proficiency 


Working Conditions and Physical Demands: 

  • Hybrid/Remote with some community-based work 
  • Occasional evening, weekend and early morning hours 
  • Some travel required
