Job Description

OVERVIEW:

The CORAL Expanded Learning Program has achieved a decade of success with increased literacy rates and a reduction in the achievement gap for tens of thousands of at-risk students in San Jose’s highest poverty and lowest performing schools. CORAL utilizes a research-based, education pathway strategy that is holistic, targeted and consistent—charting progress from pre-K through middle school—and making a difference in 2,500 young lives each day.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Athletic Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership in athletic programs and equipment management. The Athletic Coordinator is responsible for the development, planning, delivery/implementation, and evaluation of athletic programs and related work as assigned. The Athletic Coordinator is an integral part of the organization and responsible for assisting with community engagement and fundraising events as needed. Additionally, as needed, this position will be required to provide direct youth service support within other youth programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ATHLETIC PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

  • Markets programs to the community
  • An annual calendar is created for all sports programs
  • Information is provided for each sports season through a variety of sources including social media, school fliers, and traditional media
  • Season timelines are distributed to each parent during registration
  • Sponsorships are secured for all teams
  • Coach meetings and workshops are facilitated for each sport
  • High quality and regular parent communication is delivered
  • Regular athletic clinics are advertised, planned and implemented 
  • Work closely with our Partners

ADMINISTRATION

  • The Athletic Coordinator is a key member of CORAL and duties generally include implementation of athletic policies and procedures, while assuring understanding and adherence of all athletic staff and volunteers
  • Assigned volunteers are trained and contribute to the skill building of youth
  • A written schedule is kept of facility usage
  • Off-site scheduling of facilities is coordinated and maintained
  • Equipment and supplies are ordered, maintained and stored to assure efficient function
  • A background check is completed on every volunteer prior to their participation
  • High quality and prompt communication between the Athletic Coordinator, parents, and coaches is of highest priority (response time of no more than 24 hours, etc. standards will be established with Athletic Director)

SAFETY, PROGRAM QUALITY, AND POLICY ENFORCEMENT

  • The Athletic Coordinator provides guidance to parents, coaches and athletic staff/volunteers
  • Positive and respectful relationships exist between staff and coaches
  • Standards of conduct and rules are discussed in coaches meetings
  • Behavioral incidents of coaches and team members are recorded and addressed
  • Proper tracking and recognition of sponsors
  • Athletic equipment organized, kept in good repair and replaced when necessary
  • CORAL Staff are instructed on proper use of athletic equipment and complete necessary safety training
  • Equipment maintenance is performed promptly
  • Regular safety checks are scheduled to identify potential hazards
  • Regular supervision of athletic events is done to ensure program quality and safety 

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution; or equivalent experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the job
  • Three years of job-related experience with demonstrated competence in school readiness programs and services; knowledge of culturally diverse populations and their needs
  • At least two years of management experience 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • CPR and First Aid Certifications (Must be acquired within first 30 days of work)
  • Previous experience working with children, parents and community partners
  • Experience working with community members from diverse ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds, with the ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate
  • Ability to work with diverse workgroups and serve families with diverse economic, social, racial, and cultural backgrounds
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language; bilingual preferred
  • Able to work well with others and independently
  • Knowledgeable about local community resources
  • Demonstrate strong coordination, organizational, and time management skills
  • Maintain a professional and confidential work environment
  • Knowledge of child development and behavior
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and multi-task
  • Serve effectively as a member of a team internally and externally
  • Be flexible, proactive, adaptable, and able to work in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Knowledge of computer programs and internet (i.e., Microsoft Word, Outlook, Power Point, Excel)
  • Act in alignment with agency values of service, justice and compassion

      PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

      • Fast paced, diverse and dynamic environment
      • Active environment that requires employee to be on their feet for hours a time
      • The work is will be physical, requiring setting up for events and activities which may require transporting or lifting cumbersome materials (i.e., easels, flip charts, refreshments, brochures, chairs, tables); frequent lifting and moving of large sized objects. Must be able to lift and move items up to 25-30lbs
      • Must be physically capable of working for long periods of time in inclement weather
      • Must be able to report to service site on a regular and reliable basis

      OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

      • Criminal background check via livescan fingerprint
      • Must have TB test performed and submit results
      • Automobile, valid driver’s license and auto insurance per agency policy; or have access to reliable transportation.

      WORKING CONDITIONS:

      • Able to deal with stressful situations, uncertainties, change with a positive lense
      • Able to travel between sites and to offsite events throughout the county, as appropriate 
      • Works inside & outside including motor vehicle travel between sites

      HOURS AND OTHER CONDITIONS:

      • Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
      • This is a full-time, non-exempt position. CORAL program hours are from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.. Hours for the Athletic Coordinator may vary depending on the school assignment.
