Position Summary:
CJ Logistics is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Counsel to join its Legal Department. This role will serve as a trusted legal advisor and contribute meaningfully to a broad range of legal and compliance matters across the enterprise. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, the successful candidate will operate as a key member of a high-performing, collaborative legal team, supporting a rapidly growing and dynamic organization.
This position offers an exceptional opportunity for a capable legal professional to expand their practice across multiple areas of law, including employment, commercial contracting, litigation management, real estate, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will bring sound legal judgment, strong communication skills, and a pragmatic, solutions-oriented approach to supporting the business.
Key Responsibilities:
Employment Law and Employee Relations
- Advise internal stakeholders on a range of employment-related matters, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, workplace safety, wage and hour compliance, privacy rights, benefits, and leaves of absence.
- Collaborate closely with Human Resources and outside counsel to evaluate and respond to employment claims and agency matters
- Provide guidance on employment policies, practices, and handbooks, ensuring legal compliance and alignment with company values.
- Represent the organization in mediations and coordinate legal strategy for employment-related disputes.
Contract Drafting and Negotiation
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts, including those with customers, vendors, consultants, and landlords.
- Serve as a legal advisor to business units, providing practical guidance on legal risks, contractual obligations, and strategic considerations.
Litigation and Outside Counsel Management
- Manage outside counsel in the handling of litigation and claims, ensuring alignment with company strategy and efficient resolution of disputes.
- Oversee internal fact development and facilitate information gathering for active matters.
Corporate Governance and Compliance
- Assist in the preparation of corporate governance documents, including board resolutions and regulatory filings.
- Monitor compliance with applicable laws and regulations at the state, federal, and (where applicable) international levels, including licensing and operational requirements.
- Partner with the General Counsel to advance key governance initiatives and maintain regulatory standing.
Real Estate and Asset Management
- Review and negotiate commercial leases and related agreements
- Coordinate with internal teams to ensure compliance with lease terms and proper management of real estate obligations.
Cross-Functional Legal Support
- Collaborate with departments including Finance, Operations, Human Resources, and IT to assess and mitigate risks
- Provide legal input on matters related to insurance, cyber liability, product liability, and other areas of exposure.
- Engage with the Legal Administrator and Deputy General Counsel to support corporate legal initiatives and special projects.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the Illinois Bar.
- A minimum of four (4) years of legal experience, with a combination of law firm and in-house experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated expertise in employment law, particularly matters involving an hourly workforce.
- Familiarity with general corporate law and an interest in further developing expertise in this area.
- Exceptional communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and proactive approach to legal practice.
- Experience in the logistics, supply chain, or transportation industry is preferred but not required.
