The Opportunity

As a dedicated VP, Attorney, you will serve as chief counsel to the Chief Legal Officer and senior management on legal issues regarding business products, services, and processes to ensure they are executed in accordance with business objectives, and legal and regulatory requirements. Responsible for leading a team of attorneys and legal support staff who provide and coordinate the provision of legal advice, counsel and services operating areas to ensure the highest level of service is provided for clients and internal customers. As a member of the senior management team will participate in the development and execution of the strategic and operational plans for a specific practice area(s) and the coordination across the Chief Legal Office to assure ongoing compliance, ensures legal risks are effectively identified, measured, monitored and controlled, optimal resource utilization and appropriate professional staff development for all attorneys and support staff.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position is based in San Antonio, TX.

What you’ll do:
  • Serves as chief counsel to one or more direct reports to an Executive Council member and is responsible for managing the legal services provided to their organizations.
  • Leads the design and execution of legal strategy, considering USAA’s business strategy as well as legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Applies expert functional knowledge and provides strategic intent and directional guidance to lead teams of lawyers and legal professionals, typically managing through subordinate executive people managers, who provide advice and counsel to manage legal, compliance and regulatory risk.
  • Ensures timely, accurate and cost-effective legal advice is provided to senior management regarding legal and regulatory matters. This includes the managing outside counsel, control quality of the service, and oversee efficient use of Company dollars allocated to outside counsel fees.
  • Leads continuous planning to ensure effective and efficient processes and resources to support client needs, including building effective business cases to support resource needs and managing the hiring process.
  • Collaborates with key clients and enterprise stakeholders, influencing decisions and managing risks to achieve strategic goals.
  • May represent the company before regulatory agencies, including managing agency requests for information and regulatory examinations.
  • Leads broad functional and Enterprise projects. May serve as an executive sponsor for projects.
  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school.
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in one state or a territory of the USA.
  • 10 years of experience practicing law.
  • 10 years of progressive related experience developing legal strategies, managing major initiatives and delivering results within a complex matrix environment.
  • 8 years of people leadership experience in building, managing and/or developing high-performing teams.
  • Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders, providing legal counsel to effectively influence decisions and managing legal advice and guidance efforts to achieve strategic goals.
  • Senior executive-level business acumen in the areas of business operations, industry practices and emerging trends for in-house legal counsel.
What sets you apart:
  • Significant experience in a senior legal position in a role with C-suite and Board exposure.
  • Experience leading and transforming high performing teams who manage complex litigation, including class actions, as in-house counsel or in a law firm.
  • Experience using data driven analysis to drive innovation and streamline processes.
  • Strong emphasis on recent P&C bad faith claims insurance experience at a firm or as in-house counsel.
What we offer:Compensation:

The salary range for this position is: $294,750.00 - 530,550.00.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position.

 

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

Long Term Incentive Plan: Cash payment for Executive level roles only, representing a cash payment which is both time and performance based.
