Job Description

Summary

The duties of the Legal Secretary include the performance of difficult and responsible legal stenographic work.  It involves conducting research for opinions and briefs for the preparation of legal documents and performing other duties related to the assignment.  Included also are such tasks as making important personal telephone contacts, composing and reviewing relatively difficult correspondence, obtaining and presenting information, setting up and maintaining files and records, typing briefs and resumes of conferences and performing other miscellaneous related duties.

Examples of Basic Tasks and Duties

The following are examples of work performed for positions in this job class and are not intended to reflect the essential functions of any one position.  The essential functions of each individual position are determined and maintained by each individual department.

Takes and transcribes technical and confidential dictation requiring a high degree of accuracy.

Composes correspondence and other material requiring knowledge of legal procedures and department policies.

Arrange conferences.

Maintains legal and confidential riles and dockets of the department.

Disposes of office details not requiring official actions.

Prepares subpoenas, writs, and legal documents.

Compiles data from case and textbook authorities for preparation of opinions and briefs.

Examine files involving any matter referred to the department and prepares briefs thereon.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university or above the high school diploma or equivalent (GED), related experience may be substituted on an equal basis for education and related education may be substituted on an equal basis for experience,

Basic computer knowledge with ability to type from plain copy and transcribe from voice recording.
