Summary of This Role

Provides legal advice and recommendations for action to executives, management, and contracts team regarding matters of varying complexity which have or may have a material dollar impact on business activities and operations. Utilizes a knowledge of one or more legal specialties with sound business acumen and knowledge of the business goals and objectives as they relate to the matter at hand. Research legal principles and precedents, consult with outside counsel, draft and execute legal documents, negotiates complex agreements, gather relevant case related information using multiple sources and methods, manages litigation, provide direction to external counsel, other professional, paraprofessional, and support staff in developing solutions to problems presented.

Position Description

  • Provide day-to-day advice on employment matters related to the Company’s U.S. employees, including reviewing and advising on restrictive covenants, terminations, severance, and discipline, employee relations issues, leave issues, performance management issues, benefits issues, wage and hour issues, independent contractor issues, and all other employment-related matters

  • Draft and review employment-related agreements (e.g., employment agreements, staffing agreements, separation agreements, etc.)

  • Manage and coordinate the Company’s responses to  employee complaints made to federal or state agencies, civil investigative demands, garnishments,  and other legal requests

  • Assist in managing the Company’s employment-related claims litigation, including reviewing pleadings, developing litigation strategy, monitoring litigation costs and assessing risk, and negotiating settlements

  • Review, revise, and negotiate employment-related contracts, with assistance from outside counsel as needed (e.g., administrative services agreements, human resources support contracts, etc.)

  • Review and develop employment-related policies, procedures, and initiatives to minimize employment-related risks for the Company for U.S. employees.  Support and work closely with the HR Department to recommend, implement, and improve such employment-related policies and practices

  • Work with and provide advice to company stakeholders on compliance-related projects

  • Handle other general legal work as necessary

Minimum Requirements

  • At least 4-6 years of relevant experience in legal practice at a high-quality law firm, in-house legal position or both; member in good standing of at least one state bar.

 Required Skills

  • Knowledge of state and federal labor & employment laws and regulations

  • Experience advising corporate clients

  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad variety of legal matters

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of California state labor & employment laws and regulations

  • Prior experience with providing advice and counsel to clients on and employee relations and leave of absence issues a plus, but not required.
