The Counsel, Employment Law will help support GEICO’s people-first strategy by partnering cross-functionally across geographies and be primarily responsible for: (i) ensuring all Company policies, processes and procedures comply with applicable local, state and federal employment laws and regulations; (ii) providing counsel and advice to key internal partners and stakeholders on avoiding and mitigating employment risk; and (iii) creating and scaling a proactive labor relations strategy.

What You’ll Do:
Advice & Counsel:
Help support enterprise-wide compliance with the letter and spirit of labor and employment law requirements, including in the areas of wage and hour, leaves and accommodations, EEO/Title VII, and labor relations.
Proactively monitor and support the implementation of employment policies to comply with legislation, regulations, and emerging trends in labor and employment law that impact GEICO.
Partner closely with internal stakeholders in the People Group and elsewhere on responding to and resolving internal escalations and issues affecting associates.
Provide counsel and advice on proactively preventing employment law risk.
Support legal due diligence efforts associated with strategic business initiatives impacting the workforce.
Develop and deliver employment law compliance training to key partners and stakeholders.
Conduct research as needed to provide relevant advice.
Labor Relations Strategy:
With guidance, create and implement a comprehensive labor relations strategy that promotes positive associate relations.
Act as the lead point of contact for labor relations inquiries and escalations.
Support the development and implementation of programs to enhance associate engagement, communication, and feedback, while ensuring compliance with applicable labor laws and policies.
Analyze internal and external data to measure the effectiveness of labor relations strategies and recommend improvements.
What We’re Looking For:
Must have a law degree and an active law license to practice in the United States of America.
5+ years’ experience providing guidance on employment law and labor relations at a law firm, government agency, or in-house in a large, complex organization required.
Strong knowledge of employment and labor laws and regulations, as well as HR/employment policies and practices.
Strategic mindset with strong judgment and credibility.
Ability to recognize employment risks at an early stage and escalate appropriately.
Excellent negotiation and conflict management skills, along with the ability to recognize and mitigate employment risks while maintaining integrity and fairness.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and the ability to analyze data and identify trends.
Self-directed with exceptional relationship-building, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Experience working with cross-functional partners to drive scalable HR solutions to mitigate employment law risk.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
Ability to balance legal risk and business objectives and in managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders.
Ability to travel up to 20%.

Annual Salary
$144,525.00 - $235,750.00The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
